If you're following the unbuilding of CBS News:

What the Trump Administration Is Buying With CBS's Reputation
The administration's story about the Renee Good shooting was falling apart. CBS gave them the credibility to put it back together.

NEW — ICE violence has spread well beyond Minneapolis, with agents landing in small cities like St. Cloud. I spoke with Alice Valentine, a local queer trans woman, who protested ICE on Monday and was pepper sprayed, beaten and jailed as a result, along with her girlfriend.

This is Alice's story:

I don’t think this stuff is recoverable. I think these are the crucial four years where we just cede all basically all green tech production to China.

I was just thinking today that I can't remember the last time I heard or read about *strategic competition* with China.

Instead we hear about "winning the future," and my read is that the US is betting on AI and China is betting on green tech.

I suspect China's bet will pay off sooner and better.

Not only that, but -- you're never going to believe this part! -- it appears DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin put out a grossly misleading account of the circumstances of Campos's death.
ICE appears to have strangled a detainee to death.
An employee with El Paso County’s Medical Examiner says the death of Geraldo Lunas Campos at an ICE detention center is likely to be ruled a homicide. A fellow detainee reports witnessing guards choke Campos to death.

Seems as if this works — if employers start firing people for standing up for their neighbors and fellow humans — than a remedy is publicizing the identity of those employers.
Publishing the names of protesters and contacting their employers to have them fired for exercising their rights is a tactic straight out of the White Citizens Councils.
They're going to start using the Kirk witch hunt strategy.

In Europe, you typically see the anger of US tech executives openly. They fight the authorities and try to get regulations repealed.

But in Canada, they aren’t as visible. Instead, that happens behind the scenes and locals spread their narratives for them.

Over the past year, concern about digital sovereignty has increased — in part because of tangible examples of how the US can cut people off from its services.

US cloud giants like Microsoft are selling “sovereignty” as a service, but US law still trumps their claims

When countries get hooked on US tech, their governments are constrained in reining in tech’s harms while most of the economic benefits accrue to the United States.

It’s time to break out of that trap — but that means challenging the Silicon Valley model, not creating our own digital colonizers.

It's really not clear to me what outcome Trump will gain from invoking the insurrection act in Minneapolis.

He can do it, I suppose. But then what? Military forces are certrainly not going to be as violent as ICE has been.

And, in the end, there is no insurrection to suppress.

Right now there are American Samoans who moved to Alaska, cast votes in a local election, and may end up in jail bc they're not allowed to do that. alaskabeacon.com/2026/01/14/a...
Americans by name, prosecuted for voting in Alaska | Alaska Beacon
American Samoans are classified simply as “U.S. nationals” — a sort of limbo state that acknowledges they are American by birth, but denies them the full rights and privileges of citizenship.

Instead ICE barred the doctor from attending her and waited 15 mins for EMT to get to her.

As someone who has walked out of a job because my principles mattered to me more, I just can't empathize with the cowardice evinced by GOP lawmakers. The quality of your character is the most important thing there is, and to jetison so thoroughly is humiliating and deeply sad.
Why does Sen. Thom Tillis keep blaming Trump's Greenland obsession on bad staff advice?

Because Republicans in Congress know the obsession is Trump's, "but they decided long ago, even when he tried to overthrow our government, that they would never stand up to him."

My report in @thebulwark.com.
Can Trump Be Duped Into Dropping His Greenland Obsession?
Thom Tillis, hoping to change the president’s mind, is blaming the Greenland idea on Trump staffers giving bad advice. Good luck with that.

There’s nothing left wing socialist or progressive about violent policies towards Black and brown people seeking asylum and the Labour Party will find out what this means for you at the May elections
On Monday, the Home Secretary will outline the biggest set of changes to the asylum system in modern times.

These changes will restore order to our asylum system. There is nothing ‘left wing’, ‘socialist’ or ‘progressive’ about insecure borders.
