Here’s my customary “don’t give up hope” episode. I hope it helps you get through a shitty end of a tough year.
In the final episode of a four part series, @jamesstout.bsky.social talks about the need for mutual aid, and speaks to the family hosting Primrose now.

Christopher Rufo is just a white supremacist, and I think it’s silly that we’re still doing news stories where he’s called a conservative activist or some other harmless sounding term.

America is a country that will test UBI hundreds of times, get the same radically positive results each time, and still look at it askance, but will also put untested robotaxis on the road because a billionaire threw a shit fit.
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

It's not a badge of honor when books get banned. It stinks for everyone. For the book creators, who worked hard to create something special that now won't be shared. The kids who miss out. The librarians and teachers who are treated like criminals. And taxpayers who have to pay for this nonsense.

We need to be able to see that the line "accommodations have gone too far" is an expression of the ableist notion that disabled students do not belong in higher ed. Its fundamentally an anxiety about the fact that disabled students get an "advantage" over abled students.

LONG RAMBLING EMOTIONAL THREAD:

It's World AIDS Day. Since the Administration has decided to keep it quiet, I'd like to share my introduction to AIDS.

I grew up in Seattle. My mom remarried a man who had a brother who was a King County Sheriff's Deputy. His name was Terry and he was gay. 1/x

Prequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, in the Kelvin verse but based on Roddenberry's book, where Bones hangs with the neo humans; Kirk pines for Spock and laments Vulcans only pon farr every 7 years; and cameo from Bjo Trimble, written and directed by Simon Pegg. Ilia can be the new navigator.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

There has literally never been a universal basic income trial program that didn't deliver real and measurable results above and beyond any other form of social welfare, and every time another concludes with the same findings the powers that be go "interesting! Anyway," and pretend it wouldn't work.

My friend Sinead needs some assistance this month for rent and other essentials. 💙

Please support or boost her.
I got a second job this month, but the first job reduced my shifts and new job isn’t giving me as many hours as I had hoped. Rent is due soon as is car insurance, and I need around another thousand or more dollars. Thank you for listening.

This, this, this, this! 👇

You have to learn about your history. Queer people don’t often learn this from family or in school. I’m begging you if you are young and queer— it’s YOUR history. Let it inspire you.
The way that there is a whole generation of LGBTQ+ folks who refuses to educate themselves on the history and the culture of the LGBTQ+ community will never not upset me.

I think when I first came out to myself in my early 20s, that was the first thing I did.

These are also the absolute most ecologically and environmentally destructive neighborhoods in all of Seattle. Massive amounts of polluting pesticides and fertilizers for invasive lawn grass. Huge docks and armored shorelines that OBLITERATE salmon habitat. Absolutely 100% car dependent lifestyles.

Azeen has this platform because women in astronomy helped her report major stories about alleged perpetrators of sexual misconduct in our field, like Lawrence Krauss. This is what she has done with the platform. It haunts me. 🔭
It's absolutely disgusting what the New York Times, and particularly Azeen Ghorayshi, is doing with its coverage of autism. It's so deeply irresponsible.

It's the same playbook they ran on trans kids.

Elder millennials, they upped the age limit to 45 so you can get yours still. I did recently!

The age limit is only there because they assume you have HPV. But then STI isn't the only kind this vax protects against.
