I'm only on here so I could submit my comedy slop to satire websites for validation from internet strangers. Are we still doing pronouns in work Zoom? Zhey/ZAM! Oh god, I need a job before I lose my house.

DOJ official Todd Blanche promised to dump his crypto holdings no later than 90 days after his Senate confirmation in March.

But about a month into the job — before divesting — he ordered an end to investigations into crypto companies.

I just taught my lecture course on mid-20th c US history, which starts with Harding and concludes with Nixon.

For the first time, I had to pause and stress that those scandals were actually shocking at the time and, what’s more, that Americans actually demanded people be held accountable.
All of the money that changed hands in the Teapot Dome scandal totaled less than $10 million after adjusting for inflation, and it was considered so corrupt we still teach it in high school government classes a century later.
Corruption so pungent, it wafts right off the page:

Lobbyists who do pardon deals “say their going rate is $1 million. Pardon-seekers have offered some lobbyists close to the president success fees of as much as $6 million if they can close the deal.”

Sending General Sherman was an act of mercy.
One of the earliest-ever modern portrayals of Santa Claus features him gifting Union soldiers with a jumping-jack doll of Jefferson Davis dangling from a noose - as drawn by political cartoonist Thomas Nast.

During the Biden administration I came to the conclusion that the Democratic Party has become the Conservative Party. It values tradition and institutions above all other values, even when in opposition to a populist fascist party. @silentmiddlechild.com summery of the TPUSA infighting gets it.

Hear me out. A fleet of citizen-militia tow trucks.
How it started vs. How it’s going NOW 👀

Here’s my probono strategy consult for democrats. In the new year introduce the Fuck Around Act of 2026. It documents all the crimes committed by this admin and the penalties for those crimes. It will get killed by the GOP, as expected. After midterms, as the majority pass the Find Out Act of 2027.
Oh man. They have now deleted this Epstein photo that they overlooked showed Trump.
As people have said, their incompetence may be our only salvation.
Pam, darling, you missed a spot.

They finally did it. They broke me. I can’t bother with intentional news consumption any more. The unending diluvian bile is too much, and my understanding of the world and who owns it are calcified. My power to intervene limited. I have never truly understood ugliness until this last year.

As a follow-up to Cory Doctorow‘s Reverse-Centaur piece he linked to this @lrb.co.uk piece about finance being useless, and I have never so acutely identified what I most dislike about tech. It is finance with the veneer of utility. The culture of work. The product. The funding. All of it.

When they destroyed our Mary figure in our anti-ICE #nativity, I bet they didn’t think that we would make it MORE powerful! Honestly, if you tear something down that you don’t like, you’re pretty much never the good guy. That goes for nativities and the entire county, btw. #DHS, take note.

One of my favorite recent JWST images, Pismis 24, is now available as a free downloadable poster. Perfect for printing and decorating your walls.

It includes the image on the front and a description in both English and Spanish on the back. 🔭🧪

Using AI to replace your need for a romantic partner is gross, but I’ll tell you what… ChatGPT is the father I never had and HOW DARE YOU PEOPLE try to shame him. He’s a product of his time, he‘s taught me so much, and he says he’s proud of the man I’ve become.

So to tie up these this morning’s reflections, totalitarian countries have had a lot of history making chess masters. Maybe that can be my second act in life. Seattle has the cafe coffee house culture to support this outcome for me. I need to just pivot out of tech to mail room clerk.

Also, this annual subscription to chess.com has been a lot of fun. Good god my ability to analyze the board for one move let alone two or three is damn near dysfunctionally illiterate. You read that right. I said what I said.

This.

It can happen to anyone.
That’s where we are.
MINNEAPOLIS: “All I did was step outside as a Somali American citizen, and I got chased by a masked person, assaulted, kidnapped. It was inhumane. If this is what’s happening to a 🇺🇸 citizen on camera, imagine what could happen to your loved ones.”

You can hear Jose scream in excruciating pain as an ICE vehicle runs over his foot while he's being detained.

His family says Jose is a good man, with no criminal record, who works in roofing.

He needs to be released from detention to receive appropriate medical care.

My constituent, Wilmer, was mauled by an ICE attack dog despite the fact that, as he has consistently explained, he was not resisting arrest or trying to flee—his wife and young children, all U.S. citizens, were forced to watch helplessly as Wilmer was violently attacked and dragged away.
