Welcome to the bog
It’s the first year I can be smug about not having a Spotify Wrapped and it feels fantastic

There's a couple reasons so many IWW songs are set to the tunes of hymns and one is that the Salvation Army Band would show up and try to stop workers organizing by playing hymns to drown out speeches, so the Wobblies came up with words so they could sing along. SA has been trash all along.
It's that giving time of year again, so this is a reminder that no matter how they try to dress it up, the Salvation Army is not a charity.

i’m genuinely so convinced all of this has been a planned operation by the student and her mother (who is commenting on this publicly, and associated closely with the republican party), and big far right propaganda account going all in on it. this is designed to oust trans people from public life

let’s all take a moment to appreciate blank VHS packaging design trends

The TA is not a professor. I point this out because it’s relevant, there is a major legal difference. The TA is a student and is also entitled to the same privacy as the student who complained. This is a major FERPA violation, the university shouldn’t even be really commenting publicly on this

if this is discrimination, I’m genuinely unsure what you’re supposed to do when a student responds to a prompt with some religious gibberish

im genuinely confused here. hegseth seems to have publicly admitted a couple days ago that he intended to "kill them all" but trump is now saying that he denies it? this is very odd to me

ive heard a few variations of: "trump doesn't like wars but he likes spectacles of violence" and i think that's essentially spot on. he wants to drop a big bomb and walk away. shoot a few protestors in the kneecaps but still be beloved by all. he's a fucking cretin
As in the first term I think he might actually be too pussy to start the real war his psycho advisors want lol

Some bad news. The great film and culture writer Nathan Rabin was in a serious car accident. He is expected to recover, but he has a rough path ahead. Now is a great time to buy his new book (I just did, looks cool!) - a thorough investigation of movies about movies.

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."
Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

You really have to read this thread. The genius of Tom Stoppard, the fragility of memory, the magic of theatre — and the glorious stubbornness of a researcher who would not stop.
Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

This is a huge part of why so many people think we're in the middle of a widespread "anti-woke backlash": Small movements opposed to social progress are collected into trend stories by conservative media. Far larger movements that want more diversity are ignored or cast as threats.
"Woke is ruining D&D". Meanwhile Dimension 20, one of the wokest real play shows around, just sold out Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl for live shows and brings armies of new players to RPGs.

The subcategorization/tropefication of popular fiction has been very bad in general, both for authors and readers.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Still wild to me that companies got together and lied about a mass shoplifting epidemic and fundamentally changed things in all stores so that it’s worse for everyone, and then we found out they lied, and no one fucking did anything about it, and this is just life now
