My husband Baha’a is bent over working next to a wall made of plastic sheeting, which is now destroyed

Samaa’s family apartment in a bombed out building, a few floors up. There are no walls, as Storm Byron destroyed their flimsy plywood walls just a few weeks ago. The floor is concrete and sand, and two large concrete beams hold up the ceiling. Beyond the wide open space where walls once were, you can see nothing but more bombed-out and collapsed buildings, rubble and debris.

when she looks up
(at me) the room
softens
like fruit
left in the sun
—or like a clock
forgetting its numbers
in honeyed light

gravity
misplaces its name
misfiles its laws
because i ain't falling.
im rising
like dust discovering prayers
in her gaze

her eyes—
the ones that
warm the places
cold had claimed
as its own
like winter
made a home without
the promise of sunlight.

the world goes on
outside of ours
dragging its errands
its bright noise
its shoes on pavement

but here
on our backs
breath tasting breath
lips tasting lips
brown eyes to brown eyes
we lie
where time loosens its belt

my heart
presses its ear
to our silence
listening
for what love says
before language

her looking up
is not a motion
but a vow
a small architecture
where ceilings learn
to become sky

that tenderness
has weight
the kind that lifts
that desire
grows sideways
like roots
seeking water
or like stars
leaning toward each other
against the dark

and i step
into her sweet gaze
again and again
as one steps
into warm tide
forgetting the shore

both to disappear
but also
to be more present
