It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.

Historical materialism is the argument that a) historical events have causes & b) those causes are material, i.e. not supernatural or divine.

If not “material conditions,” the causes of the French Revolution would be: God’s wrath, the literal “zeitgeist,” a wizard did it, or “just happened, man.”

It's fun how capitalists say "we can't have socialism because people don't trust the state!" Mate, we don't trust the state because it is captured by capital and serves the interest of the capitalist class. It is precisely *because* of capitalism that no one trusts the state.

A couple of years ago, I posted that if people wanted to understand how to operate in hostile "information environments" they would be much better off listening to union organizers than disinformation experts. I still basically believe that.

The thing about the right is that they never give up. The events we interpret as historical watersheds are temporary setbacks to them. Reconstruction, the German Revolution of 1918-19, the New Deal, the end of apartheid. All of those things were eventually avenged in spades.

On one hand, Trump is moving at breakneck speed to accomplish a project that is generational in scale, which the country didn’t ask for, doesn’t want, and which won’t solve any of its problems. On the other hand there’s no opposition so who’s to say

"AI" is not some new communication tech, it is an attempt to replace/reduce high level creative and intellectual labor either because the people in charge are mindlessly jumping on a trend or attempting to discipline labor or both. It isnt some inevitable new advancement, it is inherently anti-human

I'm sure most people are tired of reading reflections on the election already but I think this piece does an amazing job of framing The Moment in a historical context
"It was Marx’s true insight that democratic procedure alone brings no guarantee of progress." Peter Gordon on the "farcical mirror" of the Trump reelection:
The Eighteenth Brumaire of Donald J. Trump - Boston Review
The tragic reascent of Trump is not an anomaly to democracy but its fatal flaw.
