“If BBC journalists are not allowed to mention a sentence in a story about censorship, then the problem is far bigger than one line in my lecture,” he said. “That is precisely the dynamic my first Reith lecture describes: institutions censoring themselves out of fear of those in power.

Securing defections from the authoritarian regime is the centerpiece of any successful pro-democracy resistance.

Politics isn’t fandom—when someone leaves the authoritarian coalition, we should take it as a win.
BASH: We have seen these attacks from the president at other people. It's not new. And I haven't heard you speak out about it until it was directed at you.

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: I think that's fair criticism. And I would like to say, humbly, I'm sorry for taking part in the toxic politics.

Seriously, for their own good, Dems who voted for this need to not be saying “we did a good thing, this is why.”

The line needs to be “we fought like hell to get healthcare back, but Donald Trump was willing to burn the country to the ground.”
Durbin said critics of his vote “need to understand how the Senate works”

Shutdown politics and who is to “blame” will be forgotten by Christmas.

The partisans unequivocally blame the other party (SEE: Fox News) and normie voters won’t remember this in 2026.

Know who’s hurting now? The feds trying to figure out how to make ends meet after 40 days of no pay.
i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?
November 10, 2025 at 1:09 AM
This shutdown was always going to be the Kobayashi Maru …minus Capt Kirk.
The real choice, no matter how much Senators wish it weren't:

"Unfortunately, making things better for the American people coming out of this shutdown is probably not an option. Either Trump makes things worse with Democratic affirmation, or Trump makes things worse despite Democratic opposition."
Opinion | Democrats shouldn’t bail out Trump as the shutdown drags on
The best time for the opposition to take a stand, rather than settle for untrustworthy promises, is right now.

REALITY CHECK: Even if the GOP rolled over and gave Dems *everything* the damage is already done.

Open Enrollment is in full swing and the healthcare prices increases are not going to instantly reverse.

It’s prudent to end the shutdown to mitigate the damage.
“A promise of a vote on healthcare” is nothing
