Fish Poem
FISH POEM Stella Sacco My best friend in Catholic grade school, Tony, Lived on one side of the highway to Pittstield And between the sets of lanes, Set deep down a sharp incline, There was a little stream Running from one corrugated pipe to another And when I'd come visit we'd cross the road And we'd climb down And we'd get our hands and shoes wet And we'd hunt for cool rocks. But one day we found a big fish instead. It was in a pool slightly deeper and wider Than the rest of the stream And we were mystified. It was big, much bigger than we figured A fish in a stream that narrow should be. Not that we had ever seen a fish there before. It was alive and so still That we were able to reach into the water And stroke it And feel its slick scales And so we sang songs to it And we called it a gentle giant And it didn't swim away And we thought it was a miracle And we wondered where it would go from there And we went back inside. The next time I saw Tony I brought up our gentle giant And he looked at me with a sort of bladed pity And said "It was dying, dummy." He explained he had talked to his mom And his mom had said The fish came from somewhere else And had gotten stranded in that stream somehow And had nothing to eat anymore And not enough room to swim And the reason it didn't swim away from us Is because it couldn't swim away from us. It couldn't swim anywhere. We were the giants, not the fish, And we had played with it As it was dying. I got sad. Maybe it was able to go downstream, I offered. Tony countered with a "How?" For which I did not have a great answer. But I just think If I was dying, As l am every day, I would like someone Who thought I was miraculous To touch me And feel my soft skin And sing to me While I went.

IT'S ALL PINK IN THERE Stella Sacco The doctor cracks open my ribs. She takes a step back, stumped. "What's wrong?" I ask. (I'm awake for some reason.) She takes a moment. "Well," she says, "All your blood is pink." Oh. "Because your heart is a pink marshmallow bunny." "Like from Easter?" She nods grimly. "Like from Easter." Well. This is embarrassing. "Does this happen to other girls?" She's busy thinking. "I could hurt you." "I wish you wouldn't." I frown under my mask. "I could squeeze it or melt it in the microwave." "I know you could." "It's just marshmallow." Time passes. My ribs are still open. My soft pink bunny heart beats. Blood is still pumping. She's deciding.

A LITTLE OFF THE TOP Stella Sacco You told me you loved that I was six feet tall. On that date, In my little shorts and my Sailor Moon legs, You looked at me like I was carved from marble. Of course, When I was supposed to meet your friends You asked if I could maybe be 5'9". That was easy. A few inches of spine. "Anything for you, baby." Of course, When you'd be hung up on your exes You asked me to be 5'3" One of them looked like that girl from Euphoria, But hey. It's just a little smaller. "Happy to." Of course, When you needed to go away without me, You needed me to be 4'9". Much smaller than you. Not visible in your peripheral, No distraction from your important work. My perfumed love notes stacked neatly To read at your leisure Or not at all. "Love is about compromise." Of course, It was hard for you to get smaller. If I needed something, To know where we stood, or To know I was on your mind, You'd trim a fingernail. If you could. And if you couldn't, well. "A good partner would respect that." But here's something nobody tells you: You get good at getting smaller. You barely notice the pieces missing after. A vertebra here, a chunk from the fibula there. Some time in the dehydrator. It hurts like hell, but. The alternative is not having a space with you at all. So I got really good at it. I live in a little hole in your kitchen wall now. I sleep on a marshmallow And I swordfight cockroaches with a sewing needle And I eat my breakfast of crumbs on a bottle cap. And at night, When I tiptoe into the kitchen To nibble on your gigantic wheel of Swiss cheese, I can hear you in the other room And it sounds like you're having a great time.

Here are some poems I wrote this year that I was proud of.

I only recently returned to poems after enjoying writing them as a kid. It's a very vulnerable exercise; I'd been conditioned to find modern poetry to be cringe, and getting back into it has been scary and rewarding. Anyway, hope you enjoy
