Hadn’t heard of this report investigating how Americans think about history (hint: “single objective truth”). Looks interesting.
It’s worth noting (again) that explaining to non-historians how studying history develops critical thinking skills is the most effective way to help people understand history’s value to society and leads them to support greater funding. aaslh.org/reframing-hi...
With the dumb take on AI from a historian doing the rounds, bumping @davehitchcock.bsky.social's more interesting take presented @qmcbs.bsky.social: hitchcockian.medium.com/this-is-the-...

Terrible Gallup poll today. Lots of bad anti-trans sentiment, but this one really blew my mind and should be VERY eye opening to our LGB folks:

America is about to cross back over into being gay or lesbian is something that is caused externally (and therefore "fixable" with conversion therapy)

One suggestion for professors concerned about AI usage aside from in-class, handwritten writing assignments is that you work with your colleagues to propose curricular changes. A good start would be bringing back required library and research skills courses as a cornerstone of your major reqs

Pretty clear from the scare quotes that this is not a remotely serious document.

One of the wilder political things in recent history is that Project 2025 publicly released a 900 page document laying out their plans to roll back 100 years of human progress and then during the campaign Republicans just said "no we're not :)" and then they won and now they're doing it all.

💥🇭🇺 Police have given up guarding Budapest’s Liberty Bridge as anti-government protesters shut down traffic on four major bridges, rallying against Viktor Orbán’s new law curbing freedom of assembly and banning the Pride march.

They vow to escalate with a 24-hour shutdown next week.

At this point I'm just assuming virtually every foreign student in the US who isn't deported is going to transfer to a school in another country to be safe.

Which means those countries are going to have a bunch of doctors, engineers, etc. in another decade. Ours, not so much.
Hundreds of international students have just received an email telling them their visas have been revoked.

The ‘justification’ is campus activism or social media posts.

Based on some pretty shallow quick-takes from media outlets, the bigger impact is getting missed in the focus on the Smithsonian. It’s also the entire Department of the Interior, which means every single national park, battlefield and site in the entire country.
We saw it coming. It’s history without the truth or sanity. Trump’s proclamation demands federal sites—the entire Department of the Interior, from parks to battlefields, and the Smithsonian itself—tell fictional, nationalist fairy tales. #publichistory

Paul Weiss and Columbia are taking exactly the wrong actions in acceding to Trump, and they are among the entities most well-positioned to fight back.

These are legacy-shaming decisions by the leadership of both, and those far less powerful will now, and surely in short order, pay the price.

Sit with this for a minute.

Then scream loudly.

The only legal body that could stop Trump is the US Senate through finding him guilty during an impeachment trial. They won’t do that, so he is effectively above all laws.
I don’t understand why it took everyone so long to realize this. Trump and his team have been saying this since last year.
One close Trump adviser simply says that the president’s ultimate leverage against certain judges who try to stand in the way of his agenda is that the judiciary does not command an army, while the president of the United States does.

'HA! Last night, @ Chariho School Committee mtg, Chair (M4Ler) said "comments must be truthful'. When the M4L schill started with lies (per usual) the audience called them out. The fluster chair threatened to adjourn mtg, got a motion & 2nd. Reminded SC had to vote on budget, recanted. Right on.

I just told a friend the other day he’s gonna try to lease the parks and forests. It wont be long until there’s nothing left.
I wish I could remember when and how I actually died before being sent to this hell, but I guess I’ll have to settle for pointing and laughing at all my Christian relatives who are down here burning with me.

It’s hard to overstate the rank greed at play here. What we’re witnessing is sociopathic indifference & disregard for humanity & social norms. All they care about is dismantling the regulatory state so they can self-deal with impunity. Anything else that happens (good or bad) is random & collateral.
