If you are in the LA area - Pasadena - you can also buy from a Black Woman owned bookstore with books by BIPOC authors. AND she's a leader in the Altadena / Pasadena community. It's Octavia'S Bookshelf founded by @gofetchgretch.bsky.social
When Amazon launched in 1995, there were 5,500 indie bookshops in the U.S., with 7,000 locations. By May of 2023, that number had decreased to 2,185 indies & 2,599 locations.

When you purchase audiobooks via Libro.fm vs. Audible, you directly support indie bookshops. Let's make that number grow ❤️

Yes, everyone is correct. They're not advocating for a "strict meritocracy." Affirmative action is over. They're now suing over the very presence of Black people and Latinos in elite education and white collar careers.

They're advocating for resegregation. Call it out every time.

Just imagine if as much rage were as directed at the Republicans for what the Republicans are doing as there is at the Democrats for what the Republicans are doing.

I just wanna point out that it wouldn’t be hysterical or dramatic or a stretch or biased in any way for major news orgs to state plainly that a president who immediately blames all of the country’s ills, including a random plane crash, on “diversity” is a white supremacist

TRUTH: The massive fire that destroyed Altadena was not a “forest fire.” The fire had nothing to do with forest management or water policy.

Three main reasons the fire exploded:

1. Drought-like conditions
2. Very low relative humidity
3. Santa Ana winds reaching 100 mph

Folks, let’s give President @JoeBiden his flowers. He’s been one of the most accomplished presidents I’ve seen in my lifetime.
✅ Created over 16 million jobs
✅ Lowest average unemployment rate of any administration in 50 years
✅ Brought manufacturing back to America through the CHIPS and Science Act

Today, I signed an executive order prohibiting greedy land developers from ripping off LA wildfire victims with unsolicited, undervalued offers to buy their destroyed property.

Make no mistake — this is a prosecutable crime.

My Congressman is pulling no punches about Republicans trying to withhold aid to California. We’re the economic engine of the United States. If we falter, so does the rest of the country. #CA46

California massively subsidizes other states with our tax dollars. We do so because we are one country. For Republicans to now single California out with unprecedented conditions on disaster aid — as Los Angeles burns — is deeply despicable.
Jeffries: It is unconscionable that Republicans are suggesting imposing right wing partisan conditions in order for California taxpayers to receive their tax dollars. California is one of those states that sends about five times as much to the federal government every year than they get back

In my time in Congress, I've never considered disaster relief based on how a state voted.

When people need help, we get them help. Period.

That cannot and should not change.

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012.

Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place.

A thread.

As dangerous winds are expected to pick up, we’re prepositioning hundreds of firefighting personnel and equipment across SoCal.

This includes deploying 300+ additional firefighters, adding to the 15,000+ already on the ground in LA.

The news is saying over the next 48 hours, our winds are going to kick back up to 70mph gusts. Those gusts are too strong and will end up grounding the planes and helicopters that are so effective at dropping water and retardant.

Please pray for Los Angeles and all the brave firefighters.

Air by us looks & smells ok, but I have bad lungs & feel it outside, even with a mask. Hope we're all masking outdoors right now & staying in as much as possible
When something burns, it doesn't vanish... chemicals that made up that object burn & change molecular form, becoming the smoke that is then inhaled by every living thing in the vicinity that has lungs.

It's not just a bonfire of burning wood. It's like an unconfined industrial incinerator.
My Co-founder Josh Weinsch took this photo of his little daughter’s bike, which was in their driveway when they evacuated. Their neighborhood was vaporized.

Everyone is talking about the Palisades Fire. Not nearly enough is being discussed about the victims of the Eaton Fire. It's a middle class community and a lot of people inherited their homes. They may not be able to build back and investors may sweep in and gentrify their community. It's tragic.
