Also how childish is it to be boiling down a piece of art to just an enumeration of things it depicts that you find objectionable. If we care about video games we have to eradicate this kind of reductive nonsense.

I think a lot of people got caught up in this idea of "well, the water/power cost of data center hyperscaling isn't that big on aggregate" and took that to mean you can dismiss concerns but local effects can be pretty obviously severe

West London housing was delayed by new data centres, report finds
The London Assembly found the growth of new data centres temporarily halted building some houses in 2022.

This is what the prediction markets people want! You know how you absolutely *hate* that every sports broadcast is loaded up with ads for draftkings and shit? They want you to have that feeling but for everything everywhere.
Fuckin people watching Netflix making prop bets on what minute of the episode we’re first gonna see Vecna. People betting on whether it’s gonna be a Toyotathon commercial or an Activia commercial. Just a little QR code in the bottom corner of every show asking you to bet on everything.

This is going to be the post-AI pivot.

And I expect AI to linger—even more than crypto—but in this race to the bottom as financiers, technobros, politicians and other disconnected authoritarian heels attempt to recoup tech investments, maintain control, extract resources, and keep us hungry.

I think some democrats should probably say forthrightly that though Hegseth among others deserves impeachment and removal, the process is broken because the republican majority has forsaken their duties to the country, and pursuing it would risk misinforming the country that acquittal = innocence.
Mark Warner, the top Dem on the Senate Intelligence Committee, says he reviewed the DOD IG's Signalgate report and Pete Hegseth either needs to be fired or resign.

It's not a coincidence that Twitter made both Rowling and Dawkins way, way worse than they'd ever been.

They're bellweathers for the fact that Britain's already small and incestuous establishment was Too Online--and we know it's a major radicalisation vector for transphobia.
a lot of it genuinely comes down to the fact that almost all their elites were too online on X and the post-Musk thing has basically driven the socially conservative, fiscally socialist types insane (see e.g. the Blue Labour guy) and the right is basically now calling for ethnic purges
The UK is weird and getting weirder right? Thats not my imagination? I know that's rich coming from an American, but still, I'm right on this arent I?

I think about this a lot, I feel like it’s deeply related to generative AI

Some things in life are supposed to be a little bit hard! Some things should require effort! Human beings should routinely hear “no” and “not yet” and “you can’t do that” and “that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard”
I think part of What's Going On with billionaires is that the daily friction of interacting with normal people is part of what anchors people to the real world, and once you have enough money to buy your way out of the friction you can knock down a load-bearing column propping up your sanity.

I saw a quote from the Klarna guy recently saying that people taking out loans to pay for groceries doesn’t signal an economic crisis, but is rather a positive sign that people are more interested in “liquidity management,” which is what credit cards allow. And what harm have those done ever!
