Here’s the bottom line for what’s going on with Grok - if the owner of the website is putting his thumb on the scale hard enough for the chatbot to turn into Goebbels, you should be deeply concerned about what he’s doing to the algorithm that you can’t so easily see, and what it’s doing to you

One of the things I find so dismaying about the AI-ification of engagement with writing is that it’s not just anti-creativity, it’s anti-aesthetic. It’s violence against the power of language and words, against their capacity for every kind of beauty
I am just so fucking depressed at the degree to which the definition and function of reading as “the basic conveying of information via the written word” seems to be the only one many if not most people are willing to entertain at all

ROMEO AND JULIET

HARD ❌

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

EASY ✅

It was a shitshow

I fucking love gadgets. I like new things. I set up a gadget savings account ten years ago to restrict myself on gadget purchases because I am a gadget loving freak.

Pretty amazing for the tech industry to make someone like me into a tech dethusiast in a matter of five years.

The Weird Hilarity of Grief: A Celebration — The Haunt*
A few weeks ago I was lying on the floor of my office, petting my old man dog and telling him how handsome he was before I called it a night. He was lounging half asleep on his bed, end-to-end with an...

Just an absolutely, fundamentally wrong way to report this research. AI models do not experience "anxiety" or any other emotion. This is misinforming the public. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/17/s...

🚨NEW🚨: Donald Trump is attempting to strip away federal support for libraries. We will NOT let that happen.

Last night the President signed an order to gut the Institute of Museum & Library Services. But together, we know we can show up & defeat it.

So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

I am an avid reader, but not an author. But I did write a terrible fanfic inspired by Jean Aurl’s Clan of the Cave Bear when I was about 13. Luckily it was on paper and so has disappeared into the ether of time.

All those books about the declines and falls of empires that I never read.... do they cover how dumb things were? I was unprepared for how dumb things were going to get.
