*no actually @direthoughts.com only wants to smear people who want to talk about immigration and (this is the crucial part) used to chant "Hitler was right" 🤮. Impressive scoop!

Looks to be a fun crime caper. Proves how broken my brain is by Labour politics that the sum Glen Powell stands to inherit is 28bn and I instantly thought "huh the exact amount of money Rachel Reeves promised in 2021 then U-turned on to borrow to fund green industry"

On the Today programme, a woman who regrets going under puberty blockers is trying to argue against the KCL trial. Madness! I get that she had a negative experience of PBs - but if they have the capacity to help any kids, the only way to learn more is a proper clinical trial

Labour's anti-asylum policies are already fundamentally inhumane and discriminatory. Applying them retrospectively is pure cruelty though. It serves absolutely no purpose. Meanwhile it will increase the costs and bureaucracy of an already dysfunctional Home Office.

A socialism which doesn't see having had a ethnically Indian PM as a massive vote of confidence for integration is a socialism which has totally lost its way. Why are we not treating that model as something to be incredibly proud of?!
This is just insane for a number of reasons. Why is it the responsibility of ethnic minorities to ask “what is the cause of our division”? Who the hell thinks this is a good stance to hold?
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood made more explicit her argument that when ethnic minorities face racism, "we have no choice but to ask: what is the cause of our division"

Her answer is the level of net migration, 2019-23 causes racism. (She on Monday said it was caused by the scale of asylum)

I find insane that shabana mahmood is going out there and saying "white british people cannot be asked to accept too many of us outsiders, it is not in their nature, and their pushback against all of us is to be placated". What???

Anyway today’s property tax debate is another reminder that raising serious money through putting up the big three (income tax, VAT, NICS) is often *politically* easier than trying to raise the same amount through a dozen smaller measures.

This is very good indeed on how Mahmood talks about race. To suggest that immigration policy and racism are linked "reflects this government’s biggest failing, which is that it is essentially incapable of saying that racism is wrong, full stop".

Labour has given up on integration
Shabana Mahmood's latest asylum plans prioritise return at the expense of integrating newcomers

The UK isn’t a “soft touch” on asylum.

UK asylum seeker benefits are similar to European neighbours

No right to work before 12 months (it’s 6 months in France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands)

UK settlement after 5 years (it’s 3 or 4 in Germany)

Let’s cut out the alarmist rhetoric.

A strong immigration system doesn't need to be a cruel one.

It shouldn't need saying - but refugees & asylum seekers are real people, fleeing war and persecution.

This daughter of an immigrant is proud of our British and Labour values of respect and not turning our backs on people in real need.

Even the immigration minister is unwilling to wear the full impact of the policies he's pushing. How do they expect they'll get this through MPs not on payroll?!?
Alex Norris just said on Today the temporary protection is just for those who arrive illegally. That is not his policy.

But the policy of reassessment at 30 months will apply to those on controlled, legal routes (for 10 years, not 20 years)

Despite the author having centre right priors, this is correct. Big, insurgent government changes will net you similarly bad headlines as minor fudges - but at least they allow you to draw clear political dividing lines, plus let you fund positive change which you can take to the ballot box
November 16, 2025 at 6:02 PM
"INSURGENT GOVERNMENT" is surely the term which they've been abusing but which would accurately describe what you propose. Also, she was getting some resistance from MPs on income tax (eg Maskell) - but there's things she could've done to allay their concerns, eg cut VAT while raising income tax.
Completely agree. Have been saying it for once. Need a better way of saying it, but 21st century communication speeds require a "blitzkrieg" approach to policymaking imo
Reeves should risk it all on one last roll of the dice.

Raise income tax, break the triple lock, slay the deficit, spend the money on the things she believes in.

It may not work - but better than waiting for doom to overtake her.

The idea that recognised refugees need to be deported is wrong.

You cant parachute asylum seekers into deprived areas, in completely inappropriate housing, then say those migrants are 'dividing our country'. You divided the country because you can't organise a basic service and process claims in a timely way
