Canadian law professor. Transnational law, labour regulation, cooperatives and corporate governance, knowledge politics. Currently obsessed with the uses of legal scholarship. Two time dad. Not even a jack of any trades.
I tried to start saying "grand" as a way to express enthusiasm but I took a wrong turn and now I'm describing things as "rad" like a 1995 era skater. AMA

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

The thing about politics — the thing about life — is that people who may not seem important *right now* can be decisive elsewhere and later. For instance, Carney just threw away any chance of Canada getting a seat on the UN Security Council for a generation. Think that’s not important?

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

The lasting harm of universities’ rush for Indigenous identity policies
Universities are cracking down on pretendians, but poorly designed policies are harming people with legitimate claims to Indigeneity.

the implicit standard of "criminality" is doing a lot of work here, mostly as a desperate appeal to avoid thinking (not grading any of your students' exams is not criminal behavior either but you can very quickly see how that might nevertheless put a professor's employment in jeopardy)

Beginning Monday, a Frozen Peppermint Hot Chocolate drink will be available exclusively at Starbucks cafés inside Target stores.

The chains are hoping the drink can drum up excitement from customers this holiday season.

Various group-philosophical pessimisms will have you believing that universalism is impossible, not worth striving for. That if you don't oppress, you will inevitably be a victim. I refuse. We are best protected by democracy, by the rule of law, by human and civil rights.

This is so mind-numbingly dumb. The Nova Scotia government has a supermajority in the legislature. They can and have changed laws and rules on a whim. And yet they're relying on legal technicalities to stop an MLA from covering weekend emergency room shifts!

My aunt, a single mom, voted Conservative much of her life because she thought that their policies being bad for her meant they were probably good for society.
There’s a kind of person who grew up upper-middle class and whose politics now treat that as some kind of unforgivable sin because they think their upbringing was cringe and believe the only way to be absolved for this sin is to advocate against things that would help them. It’s dumb as hell.

Thinking about how Summers and Epstein both frequently manipulated the media into giving or withholding coverage when they wanted and how the same media mysteriously decided to wage a scorched earth jihad against Harvard's President Claudine Gay. It's a strange coincidence to ponder!
Faculty discipline committees should really normalize de-tenuring/dismissal investigations for the sort of behavior described in the Summers case
