Hodgson's Frogmouth - eBird
Cryptic, uncommon nightbird of evergreen and mixed foothill and montane forests (900-2000 meters). Both sexes have dappled lichen-like plumage, the male grayish, female rusty brown. Silent birds are best distinguished from other small frogmouths by range, habitat, elevation, and bird’s comparatively small size. Song a long, haunting whistle, given repeatedly in series.

This is the best art Chris 😍 I talked to someone at the wetland last night and they said the other the day someone saw three tawny frogmouths flew to the nearby gum tree, I hope to see them sometime 🙏

Stayed close to home yesterday- brief excursion to a wildlife park (where I got to see the elusive quoll but forgot to take any pictures smh) and a lookout point.

Tawny frogmouths are now my new favourite Tasmanian bird; they look even MORE muppet-like when asleep.

Saw 4 tawny frogmouths on my way to the Drs. Didn't want to get any closer incase we startled them.
On top of a withered mallee gun branch sit 4 Tawny Frogmouths. Two adults and two juveniles. They are the same mottled white, brown and grey as the branch and are mimicking broken stumps.

Yes, so cute! Actually, tawny frogmouths aren’t owls. Owls hunt with their big talons, whereas tawnies hunt with their big, wide mouths - they’re part of their own frogmouth family.🩶

Did not realise that barn owls & owls were separate. Knew about Nightjars because we had Tawny Frogmouths in our garden growing up. Such adorable freaky fucks. We used to hear Boobook owls and what was probably a masked owl or Australian barn owl used to dive at our car driving home to Hill End

This morning we woke up just before 4am and drifted over shallow coral reefs into Waigeo Island. We hiked up through jungle in the dark, past frogmouths and sleeping cockatoos.

Just before sunrise, we got to a hide where we waited patiently for one of the strangest birds in the world...

Sitting very still for over an hour pretending to be dead wood standing on some dead wood.
3 tawny frogmouth birds. Difficult to see as they look just like the dead wood they are standing on, motionless.
