I miss the old days of in-flight Wi-Fi media demos.

2012: Global Eagle: Wi-Fi? Who cares, we're on a Grumman Albatros ahhhhh!
2013 JetBlue Viasat: Holy shit this works so well!
2015 Gogo 2Ku: This is meh, but wow a 737-500!
2017 Inmarsat Gx: It's broken, crack the beers!

I remember when Starlink was being proposed and the echo chamber of very enthusiastic nerds who handwaved the pollution for astronomers basically saying INTERNET FROM SPACE as if Iridium or Inmarsat have infinite growth potential and terrestrial 5G wasn't more sustainable in nearly every market.
Elon always proves the critics wrong!

📌At the same time, the Financial Times writes that four major satellite operators - Luxembourg's SES, Spain's Hisdesat, Viasat (owner of British Inmarsat) and France's Eutelsat/OneWeb - are already in talks with EU governments and institutions on how to provide a backup connection for Ukraine.

As the article indicates, that’s common when you install new radio equipment. Upgraded main radios, new or upgraded company private communication systems (text and voice ), other high speed customer WiFi satellite systems (using Inmarsat, Iridium, or competitors). And initial aircraft development.

Google brings up various tidbits about this. Soviet communications satellite launched in '85. Did TV, fax, phones...and had payload for system named VOLNA. WHAT? INMARSAT Compatible maritime communication system? Working at 1.5/1.6 GHz range?? https://t.co/YWx0nExCnZ 6/n

Comme je connais un peu la question pour les bateaux je peux répondre. Pour la communication tu as inmarsat et autres qui se servent de satellites geo-stationnaires (à 36000km) tu es quasiment toujours couvert, ça se compte presque en hémisphère.

through Frontex since the evening before.Several hours later there was no report - apart from an imprecise Inmarsat message without coordinates. It is therefore clear that the rescue was delayed until the people died. It was not an accident. It was murder.

Space debris is a silent killer proliferating in Earth orbit.

Failing to deal with it is not an option and immediate action is needed.

Here's what Rajeev Suri, CEO of Inmarsat, told me at the New Space Atlantic Summit in Lisbon, Portugal.
