I regularly look at the alt-universe we were supposed to be in before the CERN weasel co-mingled our realities, and folks... we GOTTA hurl that dead man-o-war into the CERN to fix things, because THEY got UBI, M4A, the cures to all diseases, & NO ONE argues about pop culture.

It's a UTOPIA.
I keep a running fantasy of the world where we have universal basic income. We are all THRIVING over there.

Pop culture hysteria has become insanely off putting so I have to weigh my options- "Is this just flashy garbage OR is this a quality program I should investigate?"

For new followers: Hello! I mostly post about movies and other forms of pop culture here (with a dash of despair about Everything That's Going On). The best way to read me regularly is at The Reveal, the film newsletter I co-write with @scotttobias.bsky.social. Paid subscribers keep us going!

Dumbing of Age, and the creator's other comics like the more pop culture focused one he did/does(?), have always kinda been like popular online kicking bags for people who get mad at web comics. I'm just surprised it has a reddit page and not just the 'Bad Webcomics Wiki' for hating it.

Main thing to keep in mind is they don't have Trump's massive name recognition from being a pop culture icon for decades.

As someone I know once said: "JD Vance will never be the next Trump because JD Vance never cameoed in a Home Alone movie."

I wonder if some of it can't be replicated, the way she talked about things that were unheard of in mainstream music. It is cool and significant that Roan's openly queer, but she debuted in a pop culture landscape that already had a lot of barriers broken

Just look at the typical action film that pervades, reflects, and reinforces pop culture: there's always a hero.

And it's always just one person.

The american exceptionalism is based on the false belief that community and individuality are mutually exclusive.

From Spacetoon to Subtitles: How Arabic-Dubbed Anime Shaped a Generation
Even now, the initial sounds of the time-honored Arabic opening theme of Detective Conan or a Grendizer figurine in a shop window can induce a profound wave of wonder from childhood. It is living evidence that a brightly colored channel from our youth did a great deal more than shape our viewing habits; it defined a generation's sense of wonder, belonging, and identity.

I don't know anything about Stranger Things. Sorry. It's just a french animation about being a kid but I assume it's not as focused on pop culture references as ST. It's about them having experiences that are realistic between each other. Coming of age type of thing.
