99% of the socks I make are my vanilla recipe. Every so often I add something like a stitch pattern or continue the ribbing just to wake myself up a bit. They may not be fancy, but they’re still hand knit socks. So I don’t consider them works of art, but works of love.

The correct and precise option: when you get to that stitch, figure out which is the “real” top loop and drop the other one back into place.
The fuck it option: just knit (or purl) those two together as if they are one stitch. It won’t usually be noticeable in the finished product.

I hold the working yarn in back for a knit stitch and in front for a purl (ie same as when you created that stitch), and insert the left needle in the way that feels most obvious. It will be right.

So, I'm pretty sure most of us don't get the stitches back on going the right way. The trick is to simply fix the twist as you are re-knitting or knit that stitch through the back loop.
Also, count your stitches before you restart to make sure they're all where they belong.
