This has probably been self-evident for a long time, but the US is not being run by a rational actor and people need to stop rationalizing this behaviour as if there is any strategy or logic behind it

It is really hard these days to over emphasize that these people are exercising the logic—albeit somehow even more ineptly—of the nazi state. They want everything to be assumed by the prerogative state and are telling us as much.
