Tobal 2 is a Toriyama fighting game with 200 playable characters and a whole RPG inside it and it couldn't get an English release. That's how upside down shit was in the 90s.

Parodius is an IP created by members of the Gradius team as a parody of Gradius almost as an inside joke to make themselves laugh AND ITS FUCKING AMAZING Gradius + funny IS FUNNY! Tobal 1 got localization but Tobal 2 never did Tobal was another Square series with character design by the immortal and beloved Toriyama of DBZ fame and it shows. It also doesn't hurt that it did alot of what 3d fighters did at the time but with a fun quirk to it Tobal 2 also introduced a massive dungeon mode (which the concept would be reworked for Ehrgeize "God bless the right (if I recall)) where you battled and could even catch monsters to use in vs mode. That makes over 100+ characters for vs mode. 100+ absolutely unbalanced and cracked monsters just to goof with in vs on top of the balanced roster of cool characters Time Splitters 4 almost happened 😭 IT ALMOST FUCKING HAPPENED!!! Post Goldeneye and before Halo became the FPS juggernaut, there was time Splitters. An IP that invented indepth map making and mode creating before Halo did. An IP that did everything better than Goldeneye, before Halo and gets less respect than copy pasta COD that gets a new game every year ITS CRIMINAL!!.. Legend of Legaia is a classically structured Jrpg with the usual tropes but all done well..... But with... A twist.... 👀 Actions are played out like a turn based fighting game where you link directions and actions to make combos and companion moves into spells and supers Isn't it wild that decades later, turn based indie fighting games would be all the rage? Just bare bones fighters removed from a huge story of love and loss.... This IP was also ahead of its time

Looking up info on the rumoured Sonic the Fighters port to the Saturn (leaning towards 'considered but never really started') and, well, I couldn't find a Mr. Han Lee attached to Square LA / Square USA, so kinda doubting the veracity of this for some reason!!

The segment is adorned with a stock picture of Sonic and screenshtots of what is clearly the arcade version of Sonic the Fighters. SEGA SATURN UNTOLD POTENTIAL When you see the shots of Saturn Fighting Vipers we have for you this month, you will be amazed. It seems the new Sega Graphics Library (SGL 2.1) is pulling tricks out of the Saturn that even the world's leading software developers are stunned to find. Most notably Squaresoft who, as you know, recently shunned Nintendo to concentrate on PlayStation development (Final Fantasy VII, and Tobal No. 1) A representative of Squaresoft LA, Mr.Han Lee, posted an excited message on the Internet recently, detailing a private demonstration of the new Windows 95 hosted Saturn development environment, and SGL 2.1, which took place behind the scenes at E3. Here's what he saw: "a demo driving game, sort of like Gran Chaser (Cyber Speedway) that had a real-time Gouraud shaded lightning and ran at 60 frames per second. In a tunnel scene, there were actually real-time generated light casting from the tunnel windows onto the walls." "VF2 Akira with real-time Gouraud shaded lighting." "3D Sonic doing Fighting Sonic moves on Saturn. What was so impressive about this was that the entire process took palce click-and-drop easy." Sega Europe quizzed thier Japanese counterparts about this information, and were told that the content was accurate. So to fan the flames of desire even more, we'll leave with this final comment from Han Lee: "One of the senior programmers of Square Japan recently told me tat Saturn has several undocumented DSPs that Sega never released any information about. If this is indeed true, we still haven't seen half the potential of what the Saturn can really do!"

It took a one-two punch of killing DreamFactory's (Tobal 1&2, Ehrgeiz, Crimson Tears) prominence as a developer: The Bouncer and Kakuto Chojin. Since then, DF spent years toiling in contractor hell for D3 Publisher, Bandai Namco, Sega and Takara Tomy. And it had Quranic verses in early releases...

23 years ago today, Kakuto Chojin: Back Alley Brutal was originally released as an Xbox system exclusive in NA. It was developed by Dream Publishing and published by Microsoft Game Studios.

I remember these games being pretty decent, if being overshadowed by other 3D fighters on the PS1 later on. Tekken, Soul Edge, and the Tobal games were ultimately better. But they're still not bad games by any means.

journey FF games?

- first was FF1 (NES) which I never truly completed as a kid
- next was FF2 (4, SNES)
- after that FF3 (6, SNES) which kind of cemented things for me
- shortly thereafter, imported FF5 (SFC) around 1996 or so before I could read a single JP character, still managed to clear it

What was your journey through final fantasy games?

I started with 6 before 7 came out. Tried 4 after.

Played 7,8, and tactics around their launches.

In 99 got into emu with 5, then went backwards. Learned I don’t like FF2.

Got legends 3 and then 9.

Went to the origins games and gba ports.

- around this time my friend called me excited because "he had roms of the Famicom FF2 and FF3" and oh my god let's fire up NESticle
