And now I am the sole unpaid caregiver to my extremely high-risk elderly mom who is also my primary abuser. I have been doing this for over 15 years. I have been uninsured for 20 years. I qualify for nothing, not even the ACA. It all sucks for most of us.

the agencies themselves & their existing operations will still unfortunately be funded -- BUT, it's of some comfort knowing that the agents are going unpaid during any full (or partial that's specific to DHS) shutdown & a great opportunity to fuck with their morale even more
ICE/CBP have gone unfunded for 3 days; how about 3 years? The best way to claw back the $170 billion immigration enforcement surge in the Big Beautiful Bill is to just claw it back. My water supply is together with other family members’ houses and they are paying half of it as they are the ones responsible for the bills (and didnt tell me those went unpaid) but I need to pay the other half. Its a really hot summer here and I worry about my cats too, so please. Any help counts.

Yes, we ALL have value. Whether we work or not. You’re totally right that there are other ways to gain a sense of purpose that is valuable to society. Caregivers with their unpaid labour is a great example. Doesn’t someone who takes time off work to be a caregiver deserve to eat and stay housed?

It's such an honour to be named alongside some brilliant talent, and obviously as a freelancer to win one of the 10 awards would be an unbelievable opportunity. It's otherwise almost impossible invest some deep time in journalism without constant worry over lost, unpaid hours.
