Zillow using "You've Got The Love" by Florence + The Machine, arguably one of the greatest "secular, but it's really a hymn by the lyrics" songs of the 21st century (even if it was written in 1986)

(Sorry, I love "You've Got The Love")

Yeah, I found the actual listing on Zillow and contacted the actual owner. The scam listing was at like 30% lower rent, and that's how they got me. It galls me that my rent on a shithole is probably gonna be higher than our mortgage here.

TBH, that's kind of how I scroll through Zillow

Found the Zillow ad. Owner name matches the plat record. The CL ad was a scam (listed at a *much* lower rent).

I'm flagging both the email address and the phone number I corresponded with.

Yep, I found a Zillow ad for the house under the name that's on the plat records (for a higher rent than what was listed on CL).

Pretty sure it was scraped.

I don’t think you’re gullible, there’s a lot of scams out there! Often I was told I had to apply even before I could see the place. But it also gave some leads on places from independent owners. Zillow had lots from management companies, but would be leased before I could even show up to a tour.

This isn't a defense of Bessent, but from the same article you link to, "... rent increases in the CPI look different from data reported by rental websites like Zillow because there’s a lag in how rent data is reflected in the CPI."

There's also some weird cost salience stuff that makes expectations off.

For as much as people talk about gas station signs making gas prices salient, I think Zillow is much worse for housing.

Mortgage and refinance interest rates today, February 4, 2026: Annual rates are down 61 basis points
Mortgage rates haven't moved much today, which means they're still relatively low. According to Zillow, the average 30-year fixed rate is holding at under 6%, currently 5.98%. That's a year-over-year decrease of 61 basis points. The 15-year fixed rate is 5.50%, down 73 basis points since this time last year. Mortgage rates vary by credit score, location, and lender, so you might even be able to lock in a rate below the national average.
