It's a great photo. Thanks for your good work against the stupidity of banning access to ... books. And to knowing things.

Force animates the word (har comes from heri, a Germanic word for troop, martial band), but so does refuge (berga, a built space of safety, a secure dwelling in a world imagined as inimical). Harbinger is danger and omen at once, refuge and seeker, force and announcement.

obsessed w the medieval origin of harbinger, it's an amazing word:
traveled from Old Saxon through medieval French, conveys in origins harbor, a place of safety. A medieval harbinger was one who provides lodging, as well as one who travels ahead in search of safe dwelling, a herald and guarantor.

Important corrective to how we often talk about higher education and college students in America. Some facts and figures (see NYT article at end for further elucidation):

43 percent of (19 million) undergrads attend community college

75 percent of community college students enrolled part time

I love the return of the notebook! Not that I ever abandoned them myself (and not that I am against good AI use either -- it is a career class so students have to be cognizant of how some jobs will desire proficiency).

Back in 2018 I left the blog I founded and I miss the chance to write in public it used to offer. I have been trying to write more, we'll see what (if anything) this project becomes:

(Not that it should ever be humanities vs natural sciences: we are all in it together. Or should be.)
jeffreyjcohen.bsky.social
it doesn't have to be this way

also: universities save very little money by reducing relatively low cost programs like most humanities disciplines

think of how many students you could fund for how many years if you forwent one piece of lab equipment

(and yes I am well aware that some students will require an accommodation, that is 100% fine, that is what we do)

now is the time to build the strongest futures for the humanities, not diminish possibilities, to create through collaboration across our disciplines, not retreat into historically fragile configurations that isolate us from the good work of our peers

Ricardo was a shining light — an excellent, valued collaborator from my GW days. I learnt of his passing via a friend’s text yesterday: what a loss to community.

Some of you know from FB or elsewhere already, but our wonderful, funny, & unfailingly generous colleague Ricardo Ortiz died suddenly over the weekend. It is the most brutal possible news, and so profoundly sad. He was a source of joy and love and was a committed mentor to so many of us here.

My name is Graham Platner and I’m running for US Senate to defeat Susan Collins and topple the oligarchy that’s destroying our country.

I’m a veteran, oysterman, and working class Mainer who’s seen this state become unlivable for working people. And that makes me deeply angry.
