This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

For spider biologists out there, yeah the chelicerae are too small in comparison with their eyes, but making the eyes smaller seemed to lose them on the mugs.

I did consider trying to add pedipalps as that's part of what makes jumping spiders so cute... but couldn't quite figure it out.

I planned to throw stuff and wrap it for Tuesday. But the air was dry so I had to finish it all today.

We have Salticidae (Jumping spider), Lycosidae (wolf spider), and octopus tentacles (the original plan was vines/roots but this was faster as I didn't have a full plan for that yet). 7 hours 🧶
A large freshly thrown white mug with modeled jumping spider eyes and mouth parts on it being held by a hand. A large fresh thrown white clay mug with a wolf spider face on it being held in a hand three mugs upside down on a board in a plastic bag. Two mostly off-screen are the spider mugs from before. The third has tentacles curling up from the base around the body of the mug.

There is a cost insulation mechanism, a defensive projection of the mind, that wants to believe: things may be bad, but those who really need or deserve it will be ok. The worst will be avoided. Surely there’s a program…

To that, I say: recall that the admin is trying to get rid of commissaries

Dems floated a narrow bill to fund the military, which can’t move because the House isn’t in session. Meanwhile, DoD is now going to spend funds not appropriated by Congress to ensure military paychecks continue.

POTUS now both commands and provisions the military. Unconstitutional and SO dangerous
The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.
A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC
News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

What drives me nuts about this dialogue: diversity and inclusion training was a corporate response to the statutory requirements civil rights laws. None of these laws have been repealed by Congress. Congress can pass the laws under Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, which has also not been repealed.

lol gentle reminder that DEI is not illegal. Supporting marginalized groups is not illegal. Anyone reneging on support is making a CHOICE to do so.

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

You need to understand: this administration is not merely destroying access to treatments, but the possibility that they might exist at all.

My antifa buddy said they're heavily invested in AI. So definitely wouldn't want to regulate or limit that.

Definitely don't go after ANTIFA's Temu income stream either. It would be terribly tragic if the entire company fell and crippled ANTIFA's ability to rebuild.

Seeing a lot of misinfo about this going around (mostly just incomplete understanding). It's not a base, it's a training facility. As mentioned, Singapore has pilots there as well.
samfellman.bsky.social
Not really. This is a US air base that will host a facility where Qatari pilots are trained to fly F-15. The US also trains pilots from Singapore there www.spokesman.com/stories/2022...

Government shutdowns offer a rare opportunity to un-submerge the submerged state. Something Democrats could/should be doing is every day of shutdown, pick some agency and focus on it for the day. Highlight what it does and what we're losing each day their staff are furloughed.

A park employee, who spoke with SFGATE on the condition of anonymity to protect their job, said they know of only one wilderness ranger working the entire park. And technically, that person is not even a ranger, the employee said, but a volunteer.

Seeing pictures of an abandoned tamale cart in Pilsen where ICE took a tamale street vendor. Those photos of left behind carts are so haunting. Community members disappeared. Not just vendors but people who have long standing relationships with the community and people.
