All of their bro complaints have the undertone of entitlement: to women’s bodies, to sex on demand, to a partner who has to put up with maltreatment. Women get lonely and have social issues too, but you can hear the “but they’re women! They’re expected to suffer!” in the background.

The "Once American democracy made it possible" framework is exactly right and extremely helpful, because it treats "democracy" not as a static reality, but a dynamic condition that has, historically, accommodated a wide range of socio-political and cultural regimes.

2. Let them speak and feel heard
3. Don’t abruptly change topics, segue gracefully
4. Laugh at yourself when you get awkward or if you misspeak

Taking in refugees isn't just a nice thing we do — we have a legal obligation. The 1951 Refugee Convention came about specifically because countries like the US refused entry to Jews who were trying to escape Germany, because the world didn't ever want that to happen again.
