Seriously, how is this “pressure?” is there a memo we all don’t know about where the White House says that all these people will get hired back if Democrats vote to end the shutdown? Because if that’s the case, several people should be in prison right now.

The White House budget office announced Friday that mass layoffs of federal workers have begun, a move by President Donald Trump's administration aimed at increasing pressure on Democratic lawmakers amid the ongoing government shutdown.

For his first big-budget film, the director Benny Safdie took an unusual approach to the sports biopic—by capturing a winner on a losing streak. Safdie talks with David Sims about “The Smashing Machine” and his uncomfortable portrait of a man in decline: https://theatln.tc/KdteqLFr

But you shouldn't be too surprised when they say stuff like this:

"You were better off being a Black person in Charleston, S.C., in 1850, when they had an operating slave market than being conceived as a Black baby in New York City or Baltimore today."
I don’t want to take any guidance at all from the secular society around us. And the reason I don’t is they killed 60 million babies. I don’t want to hear any more lectures from these people about slavery. You were better off being a Black person in Charleston, S.C., in 1850, when they had an operating slave market than being conceived as a Black baby in New York City or Baltimore today.

it has a lot to do with incentives.

to rightwing plutocrats, a D admin is an intolerable threat to their wealth & power, so writing blank checks for agitprop makes sense and is in fact honorable self-defense.

to their lib counterparts such a thing would be gauche, a social capital-negative

It's basically impossible to earn a living as an independent commentator on the left.

By contrast, Fox and its imitators *constantly* elevate new voices and encourage people to get involved.

They pool their resources. They recycle their dollars and keep them in-network. They crowdfund like crazy.

They were supposed to be embargoed until 9 a.m. tomorrow, but Reuters has a story up. (They may have gotten them from a different source)

News: Bari Weiss just sent a memo to staffers at CBS News asking them to produce a memo explaining "how you spend your working hours—and ideally, what you've made (or are making) that you're most proud of."

One CBS News staffer puts it like this to me: "We just got Elon Musked."

Peter Thiel is such a devoutly unhinged liar that mentally or morally normal human beings have real trouble grasping that he never, ever means a single thing he says, so it's helpful when he throws in one that's so blatant as to give the whole game away www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...
Screenshot of text:

Thiel had kinder words about Tesla CEO Elon Musk, according to the recordings, calling the entrepreneur, who has recently praised Christianity, one of the “smarter, more thoughtful people,” he knows.
