I'm going to buy some of these but shipping is expensive. If you're also in the UK and would like an eel, frog, or crab fact advent calendar for $25 (to a good cause) plus an even split of the international postage and the price of a UK stamp and rigid envelope, let me know before the end of August.
Last year we sold 5x more advent calendars than we have this August. Advent calendars are the biggest thing that keep the lights on at Skype a Scientist so this makes me a bit nervous!

These calendars are bright and cute and are full of really fun information about eels!

Needs to be widely shared with cisgender people, especially politicians. Utterly horrifying that Britain has come to this- that most of Britain is just looking the other way while a whole community is being eliminated from society because of lies and hatred. transactual.org.uk/wp-content/u...

With the new academic year not too far off, if any university folks in the UK have a student that might like an EDI related research project in ecology/conservation/zoology that would also make a nice paper, drop me a line

Those of us in STEM must vocally affirm that the humanities are our allies, and no department is expendable. Arguing we can survive by cutting whole disciplines isn’t just inhumane, it’s nonsensical. The humanities tell us why we’re here in the first place, and what to do about it! This isn’t hard!
Oh good. We've reached the "I don't have to be faster than the bear, I only have to be less woke than you" stage of faculty solidarity. archive.is/wGNDr

Using the phrase "biologically female" is shamefully ignorant. Confused? Here's a great explainer by @nmbaran.bsky.social.

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

🚨Very happy that my PhD work is now out in @nature.com!

We discovered that evolution, by acting in the midbrain, shifted the threshold to escape in Peromyscus mice, to fine-tune defensive strategies in different environments

This was a truly collaborative effort! 🧵⬇️

Are you interested in bat vocalizations and the neural circuits that give rise to their emission?🦇🎶🧠
We reviewed the recent literature on neural activity underlying echolocation and communication calls across multiple bat species in Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences:

Ik snap echt niet dat hier niet meer ophef over is. Hoe ons land niet alles op alles zet deze kinderen te helpen. #LongCovid

Onderschat de impact van niks doen niet, zowel in ziektebeeld en ernst, als dat dit zo’n onwijs belangrijke jaren zijn voor de ontwikkeling van een kind.

🚨This isn’t history. It’s a plan for our future.

Amnesty UK has exposed powerful & well-funded groups that are working to stop women, LGBTI+ people & children making decisions over our bodies, health & futures.

This matters to all of us as everyone’s rights are at risk.

Join us in exposing them.
