Denigrating Columbus isn’t revisionist history, Columbus Day is. In his own time, Columbus was viewed as a scumbag and was arrested and stripped of his position for brutality, which is a polite way of saying raping, torturing, and murdering the people he was supposed to be governing.

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap

I am reminded of the artist in residence at my alma mater, who released aluminum balloons “to see if they had souls.” They promptly floated into nearby power lines and plunged the university into the Stone Age for about six hours.

The existence of their souls remains unconfirmed.

Fun fact about the Salvation Army: they use a form of substance use treatment called work therapy. Oh, and by treatment, I mean they have people who have been convicted of drug charges work for their stores & warehouses in exchange for room, board, around a $1 a week, and minimal actual therapy.
