"We're gonna take away this program that demonstrably benefits voters and give Democrats credit for its existence in the same stroke."

This idea is so lopsidedly against the GOP's own interests that if you told me the guy who came up with it looked like Chuck Schumer with a mustache, I'd believe it

This was in a country with *far* more degraded democratic norms than in the US at present, where the caudillo had far power over the military than even the hypothetical worst-case scenario on paychecks, and where the use of military force against civilians was orders of magnitude more normalized.

No, they didn't. The command of the Chilean military looked at the man who had had *de jure* and *de facto* near-absolute control over the state for the past 17 years and said "No, the people have spoken, you are no longer in charge and we will not serve or protect you any further."

The command of the Chilean military were selected for loyalty to Pinochet above all other qualities, and I believe were forced to swear a personal loyalty oath to him. This is about as absolute of a control over the armed forces as you can get in a country. So obviously they obeyed, right?

Something that I think people need to consider is that when Pinochet lost the 1990 referendum he refused to cede power and ordered his military to rally and oppress the people. Pinochet had full unilateral control of the military with no meaningful legal checks. He wrote their paychecks.

So beyond the blatant illegality and impossibility of this, this would run about $15b a month. Even assuming a Musk or an Ellison, how long does said “great gentleman” feel obligated to cover the costs?

people are gonna lose their minds over this, but reminder that grandpa just says things

they transferred unobligated FY25 RDT&E funds into nonexistent FY26 MILPERS account in direct violation of the Constitution, that's bad enough

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS won’t agree to send him there because it’s not cruel enough.

For weeks, Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who is married to a U.S. citizen, has made clear that he would not challenge his deportation if he were sent to Costa Rica, which has promised him legal residency and guaranteed that he would not be sent back to El Salvador.

But the Trump administration has refused to deport him to Costa Rica, and in an earlier hearing this week, Judge Xinis pressed the administration to consider the option or clarify why it was unacceptable.

People are guarding churches and patrolling alleyways. Ran into Alderperson Hadden. First timers tell us they're primed and ready to use their whistles.

I just saw a video of a bunch of elderly white people standing up and cheering the concept of a Nuremberg 2.0. This regime simply cannot erase our democratic traditions by mass murdering every wine mom that shows up to an ICE protest. They may try, but it won’t end well for them.
