Cycling was my primary mode of transport in 90s Beijing when I was 8, had very recently learned to ride without stabilisers (training wheels) & had never ridden on a road before. My parents kept an eye on me but mainly so I didn't get lost.

You don't need experience to use good safe infrastructure.
gravelinfluencer.bsky.social
What if we made the infrastructure good enough that "experience" wasn't required? What if we made the infrastructure robust enough so that cycling in Boston *is* incredibly safe?

This post is vehicular cycling nonsense.
What’s your Boston Cycling Hot Take?

What’s your Boston Cycling hot take?

Mine is that I think Blue Bikes have democratized cycling a bit too much. They handle terrible and it encourages non-cyclists to ride a machine they have little experience with. We need a little elitism in cycling to weed out the folks who do not have experience riding bikes in a city.

Bonus hot take: while Boston was in dire need to upgrade its almost nonexistent bike Infrastructure, there is a small but vocal minority of cyclists who insist on safety at all costs. I hate to break it to you, but riding in a city will never be completely safe. It’s a risk that any cyclist takes when they decide to ride in a busy place. The more you ride, the more experience you will get. And the more experience you will get the more you will adapt to riding in moldy stressful situations.

The length of the winter season is always variable, dependent on what point a municipal politician is trying to make. 6 months seems to be the average in my experience
tinybeaches.bsky.social
I started working at a new office. It’s in downtown Calgary and I have been commuting the 3.5km by bicycle.

In the course of meeting people the question “what’s your commute like” comes up. I explain that I bike and that it’s a short ride.

Guess what question comes up, ever, single time? 🤔

Something I didn't appreciate until my kids started school was just how enmeshed the tech industry is in public ed. Attendance, school lunch, communication, calendars, testing, teaching tools--everything has its own app. There's a lot of money to be made there.
jessicacalarco.com
Meanwhile, ed tech companies are salivating--eager to sell "solutions" to families whose schools will now struggle (even more than they already have) to meet their kids' learning needs.

(Here are a few of the ed tech ads I've been tracking over the past few months)

3 years #CarFree & no regrets. A short 🧵. Still saving $250/m - $9k in 3 years! Still have a car parked on our drive to use when we need via @communauto.bsky.social. It's just shared with neighbours. Still carrying same amount of stuff on my @ternbicycles.com as I did by car #NoBrainer #BikeJoy 1/
A tern utility vehicle (TUV, also known as a cargo bike) parked next to a over-sized SUV in a grocery store parking lot. Both can carry the same amount of groceries. There are buildings in the background and a blue sky. A tern utility vehicle (TUV, als known as a cargo bike) with a large bag of dog food strapped to the back. The red bike is chained to a lollipop bike stand on a concrete sidewalk.

Love the equity lens around Toronto’s bike share expansion. Definitely something to consider for Ottawa’s roll out.
trainguy89.bsky.social
The 4-year expansion plan was based on current and future infrastructure but also a lot on equity and income. Central Etobicoke did not receive any new stations AFAIK due to how high the income in that area is and the demographics. The plan was based to give access to people who needed it the most.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

The growing number of diverse people riding bikes in Calgary is astonishing. Many more children and older people. Our infrastructure is not keeping up with demand. I’m noticing more and more children and teens riding alone! Some with instruments. Cool. So many adults with young children on the ⬇️

A great article on the rise of urban biking:

“Surveys show rates of cycling are higher in countries where cyclists feel safest. And there are few things that make riders safer than lanes that separate them from cars... allowing cities to reduce traffic and save money...”

Yes, that is a rowing bicycle in front of me.

At a previous stoplight a pedestrian asked the rider about the bike.

They chatted then ped said “Wow, that’s so cool. I’m just going to wait here until the light turns green so I can see you ride it.. if that’s not too weird.”

Rower: “Go for it!”

I wish more coverage of traffic violence reckoned with the psychological harm of crashes on the wider community. It's not just cyclists; if a friend of mine is hit, my wife will be more nervous for me. These deaths and injuries take a heavy toll.
It had a chilling effect on the local cycling community, with members expressing their fear about riding on roads. Prince George has a lack of dedicated cycling infrastructure, including even painted-on bike lanes in many areas.

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.
On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

Not that Mark was a paragon of some virtue or whatever but given his apparent public facing stances of climate change (he apparently wasted time writing a fucking book about it?) it’s wild what happens when individuals end up in power, in systems that seemingly strip them of agency
