Sounds like something a homegrown criminal terrorist would do the minute they had the power to do so, dunnit?

Donald J. About a month ago, the Trump administration got rid of the de minimis exemption, whereby packages valued under $800 could slide in without import duties. Now there's a backlog as the government can't process all of this paperwork, leading to UPS just destroying packages
Business Insider headline reads: UPS is telling customers that their packages coming to the US are marked for destruction.

I am very much enjoying that on my Mister Global thread there's lots of people replying with context for Brazil, Ecuador, Myanmar and many others but *no-one* seems to know what's going on with Mr Cuba and his sexy Jesus look.

This is as much a legacy of the War on Drugs than anything else. He has a controlled substance conviction separate and apart from the exonerated murder conviction.

After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

You know what, let's do the Annual Mister Global National Costume thread tonight after all. Usual rules apply - this is all in fun, this isn't about the contestants looks or making fun of them, it's about the costumes and appreciating them (or, you know, making fun of them...)

Fr. Larry Dowling was the pastor of St. Agatha, a Black parish in North Lawndale (a Black neighborhood MLK lived in to protest housing discrimination.) Fr. Dowling retired in June 2024. After a 6-month sabbatical, inc travel to West Africa, he has been active in prayerful protest for immigrants.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

I love this aspect of it too! he used the words he used on purpose! it’s playing on the whole trope where the devil can’t cross the threshold of a church and you cast out demons by laying on hands and saying the name of Jesus - which is also an evangelical practice!
madelineashby.bsky.social
I think it goes beyond even that for non-Catholics, many of whom will have seen movies where the presence of the host is used to, say, exorcise demons. It’s very close to saying, “You are possessed by an unclean spirit only the power of Christ can compel.” It’s the ultimate, “I’m praying for you.”

MAGA Catholics are so gross to me. first off, a LOT of these immigrants are Catholic, and the catechism is EXTREMELY CLEAR on the church being one united global body. those people are your family. your loyalty should be to them and not the president!

by definition, a MAGA Catholic is more MAGA than Catholic, they all choose their allegiance to Trump over anything else and I’m sure lots of them already telling themselves that the priest was tarnishing the monstrance by allowing terrorists near it; but this is going to fuck some people up

when we talk about political theatre sometimes being Good, Actually™️, this is what we mean. the trads are the reason Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament came back in fashion in the youth ministry world (where I learned about it). they take it REALLY seriously. this priest weaponized that so adroitly
