democrats of all stripes should be rallying around kat abughazaleh asap. it doesnt matter where you stand ideologically. trying to jail dissenters is fundamentally unamerican and 100% fascist. democratic leaders at all levels should be making noise about it. you dont need a poll or focus group.
Taylor is a loyal gem! They've already done all the legwork for you! Go vote!
here are my recommendations for mayor, city council, park board, and BET for tuesday! and this was a good excuse to share some photos from covering campaigns this year

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."
Thank you! Holler when you have graphics for the next one plz!

If I could ask everyone to listen to one thing before voting for mayor in a couple weeks, it would be the 6 minutes of testimony by Council President Payne from 2022 emotionally discussing the prevailing racist working environment in city hall. www.youtube.com/live/8QpmSL-...

i’ve posted here repeatedly about privileging the lie and the importance of NOT using the frame the fash want you to (and how basically everyone fails at this completely)

this is a whole ass thread of great examples of how to do it correctly
Frame: food stamps are used by undeserving / Black people

Negation: actually many people on food stamps are deserving / white

Kirby: THEY ARE STARVING PEOPLE ON PURPOSE. They are using racist tropes to justify it bc many people will find that persuasive. Everyone deserves to eat
Seeing all the content focused on centering all the people who need help who aren’t “fat, ghetto asses” and we can already see how the deserving/undeserving rhetorical lines are going to fall.

frame: trump's "university compact" is mostly mainstream and some more partisan ideas

negation: this is very extreme and not at all mainstream

kirby:
The question journalists need to be asking is: WHY is the government trying this?

It’s because they want to control universities in unlawful ways that courts will not allow; it’s not working; so they’re trying to get universities to sign up “voluntarily” for unlawful levels of government control.

Frame: this man is here illegally

Negation: actually his paperwork is in order

Kirby: this is a racist attack by fascists bc a Black man is
leading a school district, and the better he's doing the more they hate him
Updated post with more context. DSM school district says:
-"third-party comprehensive background check was conducted" when Roberts was hired
-Roberts "completed the I-9 employment eligibility verification form and submitted the required documentation" 1/

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

I took a client to the Cleveland food bank and they turned us away because it was too crowded. 😔 You know how hard it is to talk a person off the ledge when they thought they were bout to get groceries and they can't!?!?!?

I read Robin Wall Kimmerer's book The Serviceberry and some of the things she says in that book really affected me. "Store your abundance in those around you." I don't mean to appropriate something that's not mine but I think about those words every day and I hope to do right by them

It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight. But in neighborhoods across this city, ICE is getting chased by people blowing whistles and shouting. People are running TOWARD ICE to protect their neighbors.
