This Indigenous Peoples Day please speak up: another typhoon sweeping away homes of Alaska's Natives, who, during settlement (statehood: 1948) were forced to end ways of life (like my Grandma's) involving mobility across regions & stuck them in flood-prone/unstable villages with housing deficits.

Anytime there is a flood in the continental US, it is the biggest story across all social media.

Apparently, the same as not true for a catastrophe in Alaska. There was a typhoon yesterday morning and much of western Alaska is now underwater with homes with people in them just floating away.

That was never my experience at all, I felt like people would dismiss Ohio, Missouri, and Indiana, but the upper Midwest was respected. But my family comes from Minneapolis and my parents went to school in Chicago, so of course that would be my perspective.

Yeah, I’d seen in in Detroit (and also on Detroiters!), and I really like Detroit and think it’s underrated. But I feel like no one talks shit about Minneapolis? Or maybe that’s just unthinkable to me because it’s where my family is from. 🤷🏻‍♀️
