An ancient and magical amber bear. Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø in Denmark from a submerged Mesolithic settlement under the North Sea.

✨Merry Christmas everyone✨

Figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Mesolithic period. The bear is seen in profile facing right. The legs are incomplete. The ears, muzzle and mouth are depicted. The figurine is displayed on a small metal stand. The display lighting shining on the bear’s head and neck enhances the translucence of the orange coloured amber

Embrace Squirrelness
pen and ink on wood panel

I'm a big believer in small, dark, cozy bedrooms. I would describe myself as introspective- MICHAEL BASTIAN

Story-ALTtext⬇️
A pen and ink drawing of a squirrel in pajamas holding a balloon

The quote continues:

“-I feel things first, and then I think them through - and I need the enveloping comfort of a little squirrel's nest when I have to retreat from the world to recharge. “

It is the time of year for retreating to the nest here in the PNW. Wool sweaters, blankets, long naps. And with the world around us, a little retreating and recharging is just the ticket, I think. We’re embracing our squirrelness.

Societies never know it, but the war of an artist with his society is a lover's war, and he does, at his best, what lovers do, which is to reveal the beloved to himself and, with that revelation, to make freedom real.

Another I may have posted before, but hope not. A gap in the hills north of Godafoss, heading toward north coast of Iceland. John Ford would hate this picture, horizon's in the middle not top nor bottom
Photo of countryside in Iceland, grassy/undergrowthy field in bottom of image, low hills split by a gap in middle, blue skies with streaky clouds in top half

Far as I can tell I haven't posted this one before, hope it's not a repeat. Godafoss, "waterfall of the Gods" in sort of north central iceland. "of the Gods" b/c when they converted to Xianity, a bunch of pagan figures were ceremonially dumped into the middle falls
Photo of a waterfall with broad sub-falls to left and right, and a narrow falls in the middle

Ezra Pound, ABC of Reading #sigh
A people that grows accustomed to sloppy writing is a people in process of losing grip on its empire and on itself.
And this looseness and blowsiness is not anything as simple and scandalous as abrupt and disordered syntax.
It concerns the relation of expression to meaning.
Abrupt and disordered syntax can be at times very honest, and an elaborately constructed sentence can be at times merely an elaborate camouflage.

A small flock of Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks stopped by. I am thrilled, but they were annoyed by my presence, so after a few shots, I left the lagoon to them and went back inside to watch football. #birds

Huh, never heard of that one. I wonder if it's the tyranny of Gibbon's Decline & Fall, people feel like English already has one of those?

Not quite same topic, but I know Mommsen's History of Rome has been translated to English, Project Gutenberg has it. He won the Nobel, probably helps

History gives us plenty of examples of disease used as a weapon. There are fewer cases of governments deliberately using disease against their own citizens. We are living (or dying) through one right now.

I see mushrooms around occasionally but I'm not mushroom-tuned enough I guess, I don't think to take notice of them. So not sure if I come across those cool toadstools/fly agarics. I guess some inhabit my area (northern midwest USA)? Should keep an eye peeled
mikemolloy.bsky.social
Not sure I ever heard/read "fly agaric" before the last couple weeks, pretty cool to learn. Also, it keeps reminding me of the "Grand old Alaric, he had ten thousand men, he marched them up to the gates of Rome & he marched them back down again", taught in kindergarten for some reason

Never seen him, but love the story about The Clash going to see him at Ronnie Scott’s in the 70’s - the doorman wouldn’t let the scruffy punks in, until TW, in a long coat, got them in. They stood chatting to him at the bar for five minutes, then someone said ‘Anyway Tom, fancy a drink? 1/2

I will also acknowledge: the materials that Nixon used & GOP has continued, Nixon did not create. That USA was there. But back again: different things can/have been made from those materials, & final reckoning with RMN has to include what he did with them
