To the point, the cities were winning their power struggles with the rural hinterlands in societies where a super-majority of the population was rural.

80% of Americans live in city. Fully a quarter live in the 10 largest metro areas.

In that same category is 'have rural Texas occupy urban Illinois' - cities and their rural hinterlands have been at odds many times in history and, uh, the cities usually win. The closest they get to losing is, 'the king can rule the countryside, but our city is a self-governing autonomous commune.'

But this crew - the theocratic authoritarians, technocratic ones, racist ones - they're all shockingly historically illiterate.

For one, they seem to all assume they won't be the ones up against a wall, like this guy and Peter Thiel are just going to be chill during the Night of Dull Knives.

When at this point actually stopping same-sex marriage, drag queen story hours (in private places), pride parades (that abide by the first amendment) would require a *lot* of government force, a lot of violence, a lot of killing and a massive state security apparatus of the sort they have in China.

So the absolute insane stupidity of this is the idea that he could set up a theocratic state and also get a 'significantly smaller government.'

The folks on the authoritarian right do really seem to be believe there is a secret government liberalizer ray they can just switch off to change society.

Ross Douthat treats this guy like they're having some deep conversation about the relationship of Christianity and the government, but the dude is a garden-variety dull, shallow, hateful, worthless bigot with nothing interesting to say, just endless riffs on "God hates everything/everyone I do."
Douthat: So that’s the first purpose of your political project, for America to stop making God angry.

Wilson: Yes. And most people think that when they are confronted with that project, they think that we want to get our tentacles into everything and start controlling everything. I actually think we need limited government. The government should be significantly smaller than it is, and we need to curtail a lot of the busybodyness that we have. That’s why I would call myself a theocratic libertarian. There is a true libertarian element in this, and yet, the transcendent grounding for what we’re talking about means that we acknowledge the authority of God.

We have racked up quite a body count of awful crimes, and I believe the only way out is for us to repent and turn to Christ. This would be things like no more Pride parades, no more drag queen story hours, no more abortion on demand, no more legalized same-sex unions — all of that, done. That’s the repentance part.

Updating the health alliance map because there are people who want Nevada to join the WCHA. Additionally it seems Alabama should be classified as a plot in Nurgle's Garden.

Matt Taibbi's co-host, Walter Kirn, compares Democrats who oppose Trump's immigration crackdowns to Southern politicians who opposed school integration in the 1960s, and equates the National Guard protecting the Little Rock 9 to the National Guard abducting immigrants now.

This is why Democrats need to keep the shutdown going indefinitely.

The administration is acting lawlessly. There’s no check from Congress and no effort to find a middle ground.

Refusal to cooperate is the only response.

If I were actively trying to destroy the United States from within, going after and dismantling its public health would be like the first thing I’d do.

Just pointing that out.

This is beyond dangerous. It’s leaving us vulnerable in a way we can’t really fathom until it’s too late.

You would not fire these people—including the staff of the hugely, HUGELY important 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report'—if you cared at all about public health, if you wanted people to live.

And you would not let your thuggish henchmen fire people like this if you were a responsible president.

Extremely bad news if true (and unlikely this reporter would run with it if not). The MMWR has been the earliest warning bell for outbreaks since it announced the first US cases, in 1981, of what was later identified as AIDS.

This will be a grievous shock to what remains of US public health.

Half of my life: you must exhaustively describe the background, relevant people, each part and reasoning in the decision in detail, and list counterarguments and rebuttals

The other half: you have 2 minutes to persuade me to give you 10 minutes of attention, why are you waffling on

There goes another Trump admin talking point.

Claim: Abrego told an immigration judge that he fears persecution in Costa Rica.

Judge Xinis reads the immigration judge's ruling, which doesn't say that.

"That's very troubling to me," Xinis tells Ensign.

UPDATE: In emailed statement to me / @reason.com, DHS alleges that WGN-TV producer Debbie Brockman "threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer."
Screencap of email from DHS public affairs: Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin:

“U.S. Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations and when several violent agitators used their vehicles to block in agents in an effort to impede and assault federal officers. In fear of public safety and of law enforcement, officers used their service vehicle to strike a suspect’s vehicle and create an opening. As agents were driving, Deborah Brockman, a U.S. citizen, threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of illegal aliens violently resisting arrest and agitators and criminals ramming cars into our law enforcement officers. These attacks highlight the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily—all while receiving no pay thanks to the Democrats’ government shutdown.”

I've had trans, queer or otherwise gender-non-conforming (that term feels not great, but I don't have another one to hand) students, of course and it 110% doesn't matter. It's not disruptive (unless you pitch a fit about it, which - don't?) and they're just perfectly normal students.
