The writer Peter Matthiessen traveled the world looking for elusive snow leopards and rare cranes. But a new biography shows that the genuine self he was really seeking would be much harder to find, writes John Kaag:
A Warning for the Modern Striver
A new biography of Peter Matthiessen chronicles his many paradoxical attempts to escape who the world expected him to be.

Uday speaks. Man with no known religious conviction gives interview to paid propaganda agent of the Kremlin and describes how he is remaking Christianity. This is hysterical. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Eric Trump: "We're saving Christianity. We've saving God. We've saving the family unit. We're saving this nation. I mean, DEI is out of the window, Benny. You no longer have Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. You no longer have Budweiser going woke as hell. All of this is dead."

Trump is no longer even pretending to have any kind of argument that his murdering of people in the Caribbean Sea has any kind of statutory validity. Just straight up declaring that he has quasi-unlimited power to execute people based on (nominal) suspicion.

a few years ago if you said "college republican clubs are hotbeds of white supremacism and enthusiastic support for rape" people looked at you like you were wearing a barrel on a street corner and if you said it today most people would still do that because the newspapers won't print it

Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5 and Odd Jobs” includes a cover of Woody Guthrie’s “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos),” written about a deportation flight crash that killed 28 migrant farm workers in 1948.

Until I was 10, we lived in a one-bed flat with no proper bathroom, yet my working class parents had no notion that art galleries, books, foreign films or music were “not for us”. My mum cleaned houses but she’d have recognised Pinter in a lineup. My dad could talk about Rembrandt and Kurosawa.

We’ve had to suffer through Carrie Underwood screeching every Sunday night since 2013. They can handle Bad Bunny for a 30 minute halftime show.

Don’t all these problems go away if universities stop being businesses?

'More degree subjects are likely to face extinction unless changes are made to competition laws to allow universities to work together to maintain certain courses, experts have said.' 1/3
Competition law exemption ‘needed to prevent courses dying out’
Attempts to quell universities’ fears about competition laws may actually be heightening anxiety over collaboration in cash-strapped sector

🧵I'm listening to a book by someone whose work I respect & as sometimes happens, was hit by ignorant & frankly antisemitic language around Jewish scripture & "the Old Testament God" that, whenever I hear it, I feel like my head's going to blow off.

So. A thread! Fun!

This is happening right now, to a friend of mine in Chicago. This is a peaceful area, with no previous unrest or crime problem. Just people trying to live their lives. My heart hurts. They're having conversations no family should have to have.
A white box with text. "Y'all. They're tear gassing my neighborhood. Right by the place we get hummus from. Right by where we get the extra large pizzas for sleep overs. Tell your people."
