Alberta's crude oil production hit an all-time high in July 2025, reaching 4.32 million barrels per day, but the province still has one of the highest unemployment rates in Canada at 8.4%. Pumping more oil with less workers helps the corporation shareholders but doesn’t help working Albertans.

So, America is now deporting Iranian nationals, and is trying to deport pro-Palestinian protestors on visas. I reiterate: The writing has been on the wall that the US was headed in this direction. As long as I've been alive, it has hated Iranians and Arabs from poor countries. Yes, Trump is a heinous piece of racist hot garbage, but so were so many other elected officials, it's just that they were less brazen about it. And I feel like the first step toward real understanding how we got here is to take a hard look at recent American history and acknowledge how much it hates the SWANA region. I also get asked a lot about my experiences with race here in Japan. There's an unprecedented rise in nationalism here, but I still feel like I can talk to the majority about race and cultural differences. And I feel like it's possible to put effort into that without feeling like I'm yelling at a wall.
