Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with

Before the Game Awards in LA last week, a US video game workers union turned up to protest. "Anyone who works in the games industry can identify that our art form is being sold for parts to make a few people a lot of money." @alyssamerc.bsky.social reports

Outside the lavish event, workers called out the ‘greed’ in the industry that has left games ‘being sold for parts to make a few people a lot of money’

Finished playing through insertdisc5's In Stars and Time.

My god. Jesus fucking christ. Wonderfully heart-warming and utterly heart-breaking. Wish that I hadn't played through this sooner - this is not a game I'm going to forget in a very long time.

I think a large number of people have *never* been able to distinguish good writing from bad. Terrible writing from great writing? Yes. But when the difference is more subtle, most people don't see it. And that "not quite bad enough" area is where AI lives.
Truth is, an increasing number of people can’t read, or understand what they just read. So not that surprising, to be honest.

Folks I emphasize as always, if you don't actually show up for the things you want, they stop getting made. Sometimes you gotta be okay with taking a chance on that 7/10 game knowing it's the only way those creators get to keep making the stuff you wanna see
Keita Takahashi said 'To a T' didn't sell well enough. He moved back to Japan with his family, unsure if he will stay in the industry.

Game Awards last year took place during a videogame strike against AI

The strike wasn’t mentioned or acknowledged despite many VO performers working on the games that are heralded every year and even appearing on stage

This year a game that features AI voiceover gets a podium to accept an award.
studios using AI for voice acting sucks

A decade ago trans people warned this would happen.

The “gender-critical” transphobes have opened the door to a much wider attack on women’s rights, including on safe and legal abortion, birth control…

I even managed to get this published in @opendemocracy.net in 2022

From the depths of my finals grading I arise to cheer this on... SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS 🧵
I'm going to float this nuclear take: maybe students are increasingly turning to ShitGPT and other deskilling devices because the structure of the modern university has made it impossible for them to acquire skill in a deep way.

Let me paint a picture for you.

A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).
