I think we need to let her go. (This is an old picture.)

I cannot comment on Trump’s Rob Reiner post because I didn’t read it. And when reporters read it aloud to me, I couldn’t hear it because I was plugging my ears.

To those thinking Russia is winning in Ukraine:

Imagine if when we invaded Iraq, we were almost four years into it, only occupied 20 percent, and lost a million men.

Not a soul would call that “winning.”

Imagine looking for yourself, because finding yourself is the one thing you need in all the universe to be whole and every time you manage to poke some part of yourself out of the hole of infinite distraction all you can find inside yourself is wind rattling through an emptiness wider than your eyes

It's time to let go of the extremely pernicious and extremely delusional view that Ru is a security maximizer driven by worries about its own security. It's driven entirely by imperialist expansionism. They say it every day, their actions demonstrate it every day.
Anyone complaining about European rearmament as escalatory simply doesn’t understand Ru. Ru invades the unarmed and the neutral (Moldova, Georgia, Ukraine). It hasn’t dared invade a NATO member, no matter how small. If Ru does attack NATO, it will be because it perceives its members as unprepared.

My worry is that people who want to hurt lots of Americans are gaining the access and ability to do so but will not deploy their weapons until Donald Trump is out of office because he is a more effective weapon for destabilizing American FP / power / government than any other weapon could be.

"Nothing is more enervating, demoralizing or hopeless than being the upholders of the proprieties of a vanquished order. Simple rule-following or, even worse, norms-following is simply too thin a reed for any political movement or political party."

I loved the account of the historical parallels.

Just as with the Civil War and Jan 6th what should guide our actions when working on reforms should be "they almost succeeded"
I sincerely hope that, if/when the Trump authoritarian attempt fails, the lesson that people draw is not that US democracy was never at risk. That would be replaying 2021, and as we have seen, the forces of authoritarianism will still be around for the foreseeable future.

I think it’s a bummer that the GOP has decided it would rather eat the shit sandwich on health care than negotiate a bipartisan bill, but now it’s down to us to make them eat that sandwich.

Every time a reporter like Rachel Scott stands her ground, doesn’t flinch, and keeps asking what he wants to avoid, it exposes how weak the performance really is. He gets uglier because he’s threatened not because he’s strong.

Donald Trump has unilaterally decided that one of America's largest media companies must be sold to one of his cronies. Here's why America has a liberal media bias problem.

What if some plaintiffs persuaded the Supreme Court to rule on whether the 13th Amendment truly abolished slavery? And the court, using some tortured reasoning, decided that it didn't--issued a ruling that slavery is still legal? 1/3

If you were one of the authors of the 14th Amendment who wanted to write the citizenship clause to ensure it would never be misinterpreted to deny birthright citizenship, you'd use the exact words they used. It's among the most straightforward and easily understood provisions in the whole document.

If the Sep. 2 boat really had "narco-terrorists" on board, questioning the survivors would have been a way to learn about how the organization worked, where more drugs were stashed, etc. But this isn't a counter-terrorism campaign. It's a shooting gallery with helpless targets.

If you call it a “male immaturity epidemic,” a very different set of phenomena come into focus, as this thread shows
I'm starting to wonder how much "the male loneliness epidemic" is just straight and bisexual women identifying low-effort, mean, and incompetent men and choosing not to date, marry, and tolerate them anymore
