Was shoveling snow late yesterday & I kept using my plastic shovel instead of the metal one because it was quieter. Had it been daylight & I wasn't worried about waking people up or setting off the various dogs who bark at everyone locking/unlocking their car I could have been done in half the time

🎶It’s beginning to look a lot like #Fishmas🎶

There’s no better fish to kick off this year’s #25DaysofFishmas than the aptly-named Christmas darter (Etheostoma hopkinsi)! We get our road trip started down in the southeastern US with this small species of fish who has big holiday spirit all year long

The Christmas darter is one of ~200 species of darters (fish in a group called Etheostomatinae) that are all native to North America + mostly found east of the Rocky Mountains. Christmas darters are Tiny Tims, typically only growing <2 in (5 cm) long #25DaysofFishmas

One point that may have been lost: I’ve never seen this ad before.

It’s only when I searched for Mexican folk music tonight that YouTube started running it.

Google’s surveillance technology has enabled the government to selectively terrorize specific groups in service of white supremacy.
Listening to Mexican folk music on Youtube and they're running this horrible ad urging people to self-deport.

Fuck you Kristi Noem, and fuck you Google for taking her money.

It is both.

It’s about both these things. They’re fundamentally nested subjects.

Conservatives want their subjective opinions to be weighted evenly with objective, evidence-backed truth, that they refuse to even engage with. One of those subjective opinions is “there are only two genders”.
every trans person i see post about the OU suspension knows that the suspended target is trans & a grad student, & has an innate awareness that this is about purging trans employees. every cis person i see thinks the target is a rando professor & that this is about giving conservatives good grades

the primary thing that TPUSA provides to young conservatives is a blueprint for weaponizing the abject cowardice of university administrators against individual teachers and instructors, and university admins should take a long look in the mirror and think about what that says about them
OU has put the professor here on administrative leave:

you have to be able to look bad faith in the eye and say absolutely not, even if that bad faith is coming from the highest levels of government

if you can’t, you do not - in any meaningful sense - have an institution, and all the kids who go there will learn is to weaponize bad faith themselves
this is just rank cowardice, the student very obviously disregarded the instructions and the assignment to antagonize her peers and instructors and provoke this exact reaction, society simply can’t function when the people in charge scurry like kicked dogs every time some troll bully says boo

Need something to listen to this Sunday?
Why not listen to us talk about ”gender fuckery” (as we say at some point in the episode) in history and ASOIAF?
New episode!
This time we talk about something that’s v on brand for us:
Gender nonconformity in history and ASOIAF!
We discuss everything from genderfluidity during the Viking age to Joan of Arc, trans saints, and ”gender criminals”. And Brienne, Arya, Alleras etc!

Some hero just did a lap around the block with anow blower & I couldn't be happier (I woke up early to go do the same thing but with shovels) so now I can focus on the driveways.

Thank you person who probably got sad at how little snow we got last winter so they jumped at a chance to use their toys

Bought a cardigan several years ago when I thought I could pull off the look (I cannot) but couldn't find any of my friends who were regular cardigan wearers until seeing a friend at work while wearing one and immediately asking if they wanted a fun sweater with extra long arms and a little dragon

A planetary system feedback from DAC that I had not yet considered: If we manage to suck CO2 out of the atmosphere at an industrial scale, it would cause the CO2 in ocean and land sinks to flow back towards equilibrium and into the atmosphere. Hard to make progress against that tide.
More reasons why OVERSHOOT of 1.5 is a terrible idea:

"[Carbon] removal would set off a process of outgassing, from oceans and forests and other spheres: sinks would somersault into sources...the more that is removed, the more will be outgassed...lending this project, too, a Sisyphean character."

My general sense is that my students, like Thoreau, feel overwhelmed by the challenge of just knowing how to be a decent human and to flourish in a world suffused with injustice and indifference. Society is telling them that new technologies will solve all the problems, but the youths are skeptical.

It's because the employees on the ground are the only ones doing actual useful work that can't be replaced by an obsequious lying email machine
A study by Dayforce shows 87% of executives use AI for work, compared to 57% of managers and just 27% of employees.

I think this explains the massive disconnect we see in how CEOs talk about AI versus everyone else. It also raises the question of how useful it truly is for frontline work?

Research from HR software company Dayforce suggests that executives are leaning into AI far more than their employees.

A central issue at trial for the My Lai massacre in Vietnam was whether an Army lieutenant, or the Army captain who was his superior, was responsible for the order to leave no survivors.

Neither suggested the SecDef would have given such a command.
