Barely warm take: if you are in your 40s, 10pm is night-owl bedtime.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Apparently they want more people to shop at the new kiosks.

Look, even if you are my most favorite person in the world, I will roll up to the curb and boot you from my car/let you jump in at an angle from the sidewalk to avoid the parking garage.

I have a childhood memory (~1992) of overhearing some adults talking about how she got pregnant on their honeymoon and hadn't been added to his insurance yet so it was a disqualifying preexisting condition and then she couldn't get added to his insurance.
This is the argument for "pre-existing conditions." Like being a woman.
Markwayne Mullin on healthcare: "What the president would like to do is say, hey, if you take care of yourself -- you don't smoke, you don't dip, you're not drinking, you're not overweight, you're working out -- then you should pay less than the guy that obviously is not taking care of himself."

I have a strong suspicion that RFKjr has something to do with the fight I'm having trying to get my kid's ADHD meds. Again. And this is the good pharmacy.

Got into work and my key won't even go all the way in the lock so now standing here waiting for security wondering if this may be a legitimate excuse not to finish grading.

I got nothing to contribute to this thread (yet). But this year I'm helping my sister cook a turkey at her house, so if y'all could pray for me that this year is NOT the year I blow up a bird, I'd appreciate it.
yes, hello, I would like to place an order for everyone’s funniest stories of holiday food-related family grudges / drama / chaotic incidents / lore

I feel like we need this

See Also: alcohol is NOT a great hostess gift unless you know it will be appreciated.

You can always just ask "what can I bring?" or go for something like a cute kitchen towel or assortment of teas or fun little game.
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

Hilariously (in the lolsob sort of way), Australia has concluded their social media ban law cannot actually be used to ban underage Australians from Roblox because it's not a social media site
Me: Australia's social media ban for under 16s is a deeply terrible idea and is going to make a lot of problems much worse

Also me: we should ban Roblox for all ages
Oh, God, this is one of those "where do I even start" things, because Roblox is, like, *fractally* fucked. They are terrible at content moderation. A lot of the games are rated incorrectly, so kids can encounter graphic content (sex or violence) out of nowhere --

There might be an exception to Buy Nothing Day this year.
In Monrovia, California, protesters are purchasing 17¢ ICE scrapers from Home Depot and immediately returning them to create long lines and slow down the entire store. Their aim is to disrupt sales and convey a message opposing ICE raids occurring in their neighborhood.

Community isn’t something you show up to consume. It requires you to contribute, collaborate, and commit-create.

If you want community, you have to be community.

That's what botulism does.

My oldest kid had it as a toddler. We spent TEN WEEKS in the hospital, several of them in ICU.

DO NOT FUCK AROUND WITH BOTULISM.

hospitalized.

As I always say when some right-winger starts going on about "red tape that slows innovation", every regulation on the books represents a lesson we as a society learned the hard way, and then encoded so we wouldn't forget. It's someone's blood & pain.
I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.
AirBnB CEO calling it “vibe revenue” just 👨‍🍳 😘

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

Nearly every panel I spoke on this year ended with the same question: "What gives you hope?"

My friends, that question expired years ago. (If you need receipts, my book Saving Us is literally a 300-page answer.)

The real question is: How are you PRACTICING hope?

Because Greta is right ..
