It's hard to find the words to react to Shabana Mahmood's policy on asylum seekers announced today. But thankfully this should show why her position isn't tenable: the world is as dangerous as it was when she was in opposition. Her change of position is career orientated.

Peat moors are irreplaceable habitats, full of unique wildlife. It takes thousands of years for them to form. The UK is, quite rightly, banning the sale of peat. Unfortunately they are not doing enough, and the full ban won’t come into effect until 2030.

This happens every year on Grouse moors. It is a criminal offence to shoot raptors. Yet even when there is obvious evidence of criminality, the police do nothing. The system does not care about the wildlife that keeps this planet alive and well.
Hen Harrier Susie, whose chicks were stamped to death on a Yorkshire Dales grouse moor in 2022, has been found dead on a N Pennines grouse moor with gunshot injuries.
