Today I learned Americans spend 1% of the global GDP on auto insurance premiums alone and I haven’t even started reading @thewaroncars.bsky.social book yet.

In 1999, resident Louis Massano eloquently writes why the previous boondoggle Turnpike expansion through Jersey City was a horrible idea. The proposed expansion was ultimately unsuccessful due to local opposition: www.geocities.ws/hartwheels/C...

We also need some actual planning and zoning from Weehawken, West New York, and North Bergen. Big new buildings going up with zero retail. No coffee, bagels, restaurants, retail, diapers, daycares. Just lots and lots of parking. Then the new residents move-in and immediately complain about traffic.
We've seen the same arguments being made over on this side of the Hudson about #RiverRoad redesign
"We are pro-bikes. We just think this is a really bad idea."

It's like NIMBY Mad Libs! As we write in the book, it's actually somewhat encouraging that bike lane opponents can't come up with new things to say.
Brooklyn neighbors fear new bike lanes on busy McDonald Avenue will be dangerous
Windsor Terrace neighbors are growing concerned the city's plan to redesign the busy four-lane corridor with bike lanes will make it less safe.

New road layout outside a primary school in Utrecht. Bike parking, greenery and cycle tracks to keep kids and parents safe. Compare this to the dangerous car orientated mess that is Downham Road in Hackney!

NEW RESEARCH: Parked cars can account for 10 percent of the surface areas of some cities. It turns out that their albedo (reflectivity) can significantly contribute to the urban heat island effect.

Dark-coloured cars are the worst, making the air around them 3.8°C hotter vs nearby asphalt road.

Horrific crash on Tonnelle Ave resulting in two fatalities. The state must prioritize this corridor on their Target Zero Commission Plan.

China’s cycling resurgence can best be admired at street level, where cities like Kunshan are building infrastructure of incredibly high quantity and quality.

Cohesive networks that offer both practical connectivity and inviting usability; with abundant width, shade, protection, and natural beauty.

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

"They said the driver, who dropped off her child at the school, did not see the boy and drove nearly the length of the block with him pinned underneath the vehicle. Witnesses told police the car appeared to be moving at a high rate of speed."

The next block of the new Hennepin Ave S bikeway (26th → 25th) is open! 🚲✨ Smooth, wide, and separated. Can’t wait for the full stretch to be done. #mplsbike #BikeLife
Start off the autumn with our "Tour de Weehawken"! We'll ride through the 3 wards of Weehawken and down to Pier A in Hoboken, and we'll end our ride conquering the hill of Pershing Boulevard.

What's it like being hit by a car going 40 mph? It exerts similar force as falling off a 54-foot ladder.

Kudos to the Virginia DMB for this powerful demonstration in Richmond.

"Last year..410 people lost their lives in speed-related crashes across Virginia"

When designed right, bike infrastructure is actually found to improve the response times of first responders!

Don’t let ignorance stop good urbanism!

Just imagine @mikiesherrill.bsky.social, what we could accomplish if we ran frequent service, expanded service to the Ironbound and Newark Penn, fix PATH, improve bus service - then we won’t need to waste billions to demolish a highway & rebuild it just to add ONE lane of traffic.
Analyzing raw ridership is useful but ignores service levels; so I charted transit rides per service hour & discovered JC has the most productive US rail line, NJ should expand HBLR & run it more instead of building highways!

Also I knew Denver’s LRT was ineffective but still surprised it’s last

I haven’t seen it illustrated like this before. Very effective messaging. Of course it actually depends a lot on how fast the vehicle’s being driven, how big the vehicle is and how it’s designed, and how small the victims (too often kids) are. Via @yegbike.bsky.social #SpeedKills #CarBloat

However, some of the completed segments are top-notch. Some of the best bike infrastructure I’ve seen.
