but i think it could fill a niche for the problem of "why does texting your partner from the other room require sending data up to space and back"
i didnt sleep well and am apparently yappy so my take on meshtastic today is that i wouldn't trust it for anything secure any more than anything else that can connect to your phone...

I follow a Norwegian lighthouse keeper named Paal Bjørndal whose whole bit is sharing profound things that are inaudible due to high winds. I love the internet.
programmers do have a lot of leverage in the modern world-- we could stop a lot of evil if we acted together-- and this is why we are some of the most brainwashed people in history
and it never answers, who made the design decisions and who benefits from them
the "move fast break things" mentality (even when used for supposedly good causes) is a form of productivism
idleness or design refusal is far better than participating in work that makes your boss' life easier
a lot of the work that programmers are made to do is unnecessary, wasteful, or evil at worse, facilitating surveillance or repression of other people
i am still workshopping this concept but i think programmers need to think a lot more clearly about productivism and how it's used as a cudgel to beat other workers (and ourselves) with

Every decade, university administrators excite themselves over the prospects of firing all the faculty and 95% of the staff.

Early 2020s: LLMs
Early 2010s: MOOCs
Early 2000s: Wikis
In ways that we haven't fully internalized, LLM discourse is reanimating key features of 2004ish Wikipedia discourse.
Wow. Just wow.

I bet we could create an amish esque paralell society based on pre 2012 technologies. We stop before cloud computing. No AI, not-fun smartphones with physical buttons, it's gonna be great. Amish 2

@reveleth.com joins @emilymbender.bsky.social and I to talk about how we don’t need tech bros to read sci-fi better, they need to understand it better.
and nobody in the chapter (or district) gets any input on the platform or language, this is all decided on high by The Experts
(canvassing for a democrat followed by canvassing for nonprofitoid ballot initiatives followed by canvassing for a democrat followed by canvassing for....)
until i am actually in a demcent org (which i'd never join), i will take joy in publicly speaking against dumb decisions the misleaders of my dsa chapter have made

The “get em while they’re young” plan worked for Big Tobacco and… other institutions
OpenAI’s strategy is very clear, it’s trying to get people - especially young people - so reliant on its products intellectually & emotionally (& now sexually!) that going without them becomes unthinkable. And they need signs of that strategy working to keep the funding flowing in

I strongly urge everyone to not just read this warning from @marcwatkins.bsky.social, but heed it, and be vocal and forceful pushing back against using AI to grade student writing. This must be anathema if we're going to have a world where learning means something. substack.com/inbox/post/1...

this is an incredibly ominous beginning to a future with a largely carved out federal emergency response system
NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.
