Before people believe that this is an evil of a particular sector, the same thing has happened in finance, and probably reflects the larger trend of more people getting undergraduate degrees.
one of the things i objected to most at at GOOG over the years, from the labor perspective, is the slow decay of the blue-collar routes up into corp. you used to encounter guys who started out swapping drives in 120 degree heat in the hot aisles and who were now SREs, and that's gone.

When financial markets professionals use that term, “algorithmic trading”, we don’t mean “a strategy that involves an algorithm at some point”. We mean “a strategy that is entirely executed by an algorithm”. And those do not have 18 hour latencies for digesting an earnings release/call.
