It's time to take the power back from the price-fixing corporate cartels that have a stranglehold on our economy and put it in the hands of the people.

As part of his bold new vision for Canada, Avi Lewis, the progressive vying to lead the New Democratic Party, has proposed a series of "public options" for everything from groceries to telecoms to banking to address the nation's cost-of-living crisis.
NDP Candidate Avi Lewis Calls for 'Public Options' to Fight High Costs of Groceries, Housing, and Telecoms in Canada
“When people are being gouged at the checkout aisle, on their phone bills, and in their rents, it’s clear that the market is failing,” Lewis said.

Vancouverites can’t afford Ken Sim’s budget.
Look who's gonna pay for Ken Sim's tax break for the super-rich:

"most park board program and service fees will rise next year by an average of about 5%...swimming lessons, skate rentals and admissions to public golf courses, attractions and parks, among other things."

This budget debate is painful.

The mayor sets an arbitrary budget target (so he can say he raised taxes less than the last mayor) then he shovels money at the police ….

and then every other city budget item has to justify its existence vs “filling potholes”.

We could live in a country where we reduce our energy bills, clean our air and water, revitalize our communities, take back our energy sovereignty, and create thousands of good-paying union jobs in the process.

The secret? Public ownership.

When Jamal Khashoggi was killed , all the TV networks were chasing me down to have me on to talk about Trump, Mohammed Bin Salman, Saudi Arabia and the murder.

Now that MBS is back in town and being wined and dined by Trump, Musk, Bezos and other tech billionaires?

I have not had one TV invite.

Sim has shown throughou his term--especially in Council meetings, that he is lazy and unprepared most days. Almost every meeting when bylaws are voted on: "did not read, will not be voting".
He likes to "wing it" because it means less work, and he thinks he's smarter than everyone else. #vanpoli

Ken Sim's comments on EarlyEd were delusional:

His defense of "thorough budget presentation" suggested councillors were afforded multiple rounds of questions. In fact, critical councillors were given only two 5min blocks for questions and answers on 90 slide, 23p, $2.4b budget before ABC cut us off
Listening to Ken Sim’s @cbcstephenquinn.bsky.social interview and it’s kind of surprising his team doesn’t prepare him better for this tough interviewer.

He says the police board has said no to some budget asks and the police have cut back their spending - but can’t name examples. #vanpoli

I love that 100 years after we learned that booze prohibition didn’t stop consumption, just made it deadly, we’re starting to put together that drug prohibition doesn’t work either.
Health Canada convened an independent expert advisory group in 2020 to provide guidance on safer supply. Health Canada heavily redacted its final report, but unredacted version obtained by CBC shows the expert group said drug crisis is driven by prohibition and recommended expansion of safer supply

Congratulations, Seattle!

Across North America, a new era is underway.

People are tired of politics as usual, and are ready to vote for courageous leaders who will fight for the cities we need.
We took on a powerful incumbent who was expected to coast to reelection.

We faced more corporate PAC money than has ever been spent attacking a candidate in a Seattle election.

We built a people-powered movement rooted in hope for our city’s future.

And we won.

This is YOUR city!

Ok folks we are back at it again from 1-5. Yesterday was a lot. Heard from so many passionate Vancouverites.

Unfortunately I heard the mayor say it was a waste of time. But I assure you, I’m listening.
Budget hearing continued after short recess. 157: environmental lawyer (?)Reads poem. 158: raised in east van. This is austerity and hasn’t been asked for. I’ve been lucky enough to use public services. Breaks my heart to think they won’t get same quality. Few people asked for this police budget.

A rising cost of living—especially for housing—has caused the highest ever Metro Vancouver living wage.

This is the hourly rate that a full-time worker must earn to cover essential expenses for a basic, decent standard of living and to avoid chronic financial stress.
