I'm sad and angry about what's happened over there, but I love the positive and pro-social vibe here at Bluesky. I think it is past time for me to introduce myself properly.

My dad survived the Nazi occupation of Denmark. Though I didn't grow up there, I heard enough to know how painful a time it was. The Danes have not forgotten what happens when fascist bullies move in, and they will not sit idly by while it happens again - nor will they be alone in fighting.
“Denmark will not hand over Greenland even if the USA threatens us with nuclear weapons.

“I am not saying this to…try to be tough. We are small and no match for the USA. We know that. But we are not doing it under any circumstances.” - Rasmus Jarlov, Chair of Denmark’s Defence Committee.

The people who killed her were following it.

Seven MILLION died, and countless untold people were left indefinitely or permanently disabled. Our healthcare systems NEVER recovered to how things were before. Good lord.
there’s a thread on reddit right now called “was COVID really that bad?” and it is interesting to read people’s accounts five years out

there seems to be a collective trauma response where people (outside of healthcare workers) don’t remember how many people died

someone called it anticlimactic

I know it feels awkward to wear a mask, especially if you haven't been doing it lately. I know you're worried about how people will perceive you at work, socially, in stores, etc. I know you're getting pushback from your family. I know kids bring home lots of illness from school. Do it anyway.

2020-21, there were maybe 700 flu deaths nationwide and only one pediatric flu death.

We know how to do this.

We choose not to.

The most under-reported story of the year, IMO, is about the national implications of the extreme and wildly popular success of congestion pricing in New York City.

When you remove cars from cities, you not only make money for things the city needs; you make people in the city much, much happier.
It's hard to think of another policy that is so fundamentally a free lunch as congestion pricing is
Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.
