Here's a thread about how I get my news. I'm not sharing it because I think it's "right", but as an example for anyone to think about their own process navigating increasingly consolidated MSM and the fall of Twitter.

Even in its terribly debilitated state GO Expansion still is the infrastructure project with the highest BCR on the continent. Easily a top national priority.

In any sane developed country this is a 5-year modernization program. Our incompetent institutions live in fear of doing literally anything
What I mean is that Toronto has a solid thru-running central trunk. It has mostly dealt with core freight conflicts. Mostly has a comprehensive regional network to work with. It just needs to hang the wires, buy the EMUs, raise the platforms, add some extra tracks, grade separations and run trains
I think Toronto regional transit planning is really conceptually quite easy! improve the infrastructure, spam more trains, improve the infrastructure, spam more trains. Like there's not huge trade offs or mega projects you just gotta figure out how to do the basic stuff.

When I see people using genAI, I’ve found it productive to ask about why in order to induce dissonance. Usually, I find that it’s a reflection of emotion (e.g., overwhelm), skill (which can be taught), or lack of support (e.g., overworked ->shortcut), which genAI is never a permanent solution for.
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

I can't speak for what was said at the protests, but seeing people react to an anodyne statement like "sacred spaces should not be used to promote activities in violation of international law" as if it were a vicious slur is clarifying.
Zohran Mamdani chastised a Manhattan synagogue that hosted an event promoting migration to Israel and settlements in occupied territories. His stance further tested his strained relationship with pro-Israel Jews in New York.

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.

So, he’s joining the Blue Jays?
Tatsuya Imai brought the "I come to bury Ohtani, not to praise him," vibes in an interview with Daisuke Matsuzaka last night.

The Seibu Lions ace doesn't want to join the Dodgers, he wants to beat them. Thanks to Ayako Oikawa for help translating: www.mlb.com/news/tatsuya...

One thing that goes unmentioned in this (very good) piece is that we actually did have a really good system for (ahem) verifying who was real and who was who on Twitter, at one point.
I wrote about the fake account blowup on X this weekend. A genuine post-truth nightmare and proof that these companies have polluted their platforms so thoroughly and traded reality for profit that they've undermined the very idea of what the internet is supposed to be.

really good study on the problem of finding teachers, with properly complex answers

-there has been a severe recent decline in the prestige and appeal of teaching as an occupation
-teacher pay and job security are the two clearest causal factors but they're not all of it

it has been looked at, to some degree, but I recommend this article for a comprehensive review of the issues: edworkingpapers.com/ai22-679

The Tinkerbell Economy (the bubble doesn't collapse as long as enough people keep clapping for AI)
there should be a word for the economy other than "bubble" if everyone acknowledging it's a bubble doesn't pop it. popping really easily is kind of the thing bubbles are known for. there's no such thing as a resilient bubble you can keep poking for months/years

So much land. So much valuable land now in the hands of a government that has been trying to sell off the greenbelt, provincial parks and Ontario place.

It is not conspiratorial. It's recent history.
The government says Bill 33 has received Royal Assent and is now law.

It will make it easier for the education minister to take over school boards in the province by appointing a supervisor and sidelining trustees. #onpoli globalnews.ca/news/1153148...

When they say Trump calling a reporter "piggy" is "just being honest," they are revealing a key feature of the reactionary mind: it believes, at a deep brainstem level, that *everyone* is awful & selfish & ugly on the inside. Everyone just suppresses it out of fear of social disapproval. Not Trump!
