Wow — Senators Van Hollen, Smith, Murphy, Sanders, Warren, Markey, Merkley, Heinrich have created an official internal "Fight Club."

They're challenging Schumer & Gillibrand's leadership, arguing the party is using an old, corporate-friendly playbook insufficient to take on Trump or win elections.

A spider cricket appears in the basement. My husband is playing the video game Helldivers, fighting giant bugs. I point to the spricket. “Fight the real enemy,” I say with the intensity of Sinead O’ Connor on SNL.

My husband kills the spider cricket. His Helldivers avatar dies. But we are safe.

“After having extensive conversations with ChatGPT about his depression and suicidal ideation, ChatGPT still provided Joshua with information on how to purchase and use a gun, according to the court complaint reviewed by USA TODAY.”
He told ChatGPT he was suicidal. It helped with his plan, family says.
A lawsuit against OpenAI claims that Joshua Enneking, 26, was coached into suicide by ChatGPT after confiding in the chatbot for months.

Serious question: When the AI bubble bursts, what’s going to happen to all those “Professor of AI” positions that universities went all in on in the last few years? UMD, one of my alma maters, hired a slew of them last year.

One thing that is not getting enough attention is that Trump has normalized the idea of the United States supporting the transfer of territory and millions of people from a democracy to a dictatorship.
The ending of freedom for millions is now the official US position.

I'm going to preface this by saying I've taught speech and communications for many years and I know that vocalized pauses are a natural human tendency. But the one that has seemed to developed recently, the one that takes me right out of a talk, is tacking on "...right?" at the end of a sentence.

even when AI is surveying reputable sources, we shouldn't forget that summarizing and synthesizing are interpretive activities that involve selecting what is most significant or salient to ongoing discussions. even if AI were unbiased, this is creative work that we should be doing.

I think the shortest version of why LLMs are an anti education technology is that education is fundamentally about making shared context to understand ourselves, each other, and the world

And by design LLMs destroy shared context

There is no congruent way to look at generative AI and think “this is the future.” The most well known fact about it is that it messes up all the time, the next being that it loses lots of money.
