Here's my introduction to Jean Rabe, which appears in the Designers & Dragons Second Origins books I'm now working on.
III: Introducing Jean Rabe. Jean Rabe started her professional career as a journalist, studying at Northern Illinois University before moving on to a newspaper. However, she quickly got tired of the blood and gore of being a crime reporter. Meanwhile, she’d been playing D&D since 1975 and was also a regular attendee of science-fiction conventions, which is how she met Penny Petticord. Petticord told Rabe that she was planning to quit her job at the RPGA and Rabe should apply for the position. Rabe did, but TSR tried to get her to take the job of Gen Con Coordinator. Rabe was uninterested: she wanted a job writing and editing, which was what the RPGA job offered. That’s how Rabe become the RPGA’s fourth Network Coordinator on March 23, 1987. And write and edit she did, not only taking over Polyhedron magazine (1981-2002) but also producing numerous tournament scenarios, sometimes alongside her husband—chemist and roleplayer Bruce Rabe. One of their earliest adventures had already appeared in C6: The Official RPGA Tournament Handbook (1987). Much of the 1989 RPGA explosion would be their work as well. Rabe would remain the Network Coordinator at the RPGA through early 1995. Beyond her RPGA work, Jean would also produce a number of original RPG designs over the coming years. She would be even more successful as a novelist, starting with Red Magic (1991).

Honor your agreements—pay your freelancers. If you’re in a tight spot financially, or other parties cause money problems so that you’re suddenly low on funds, that’s unfortunately completely irrelevant. The freelancers don’t need to care about that. Pay them.

As usual, "keep politics out of gaming" means "support the conservative status quo, but don't dare talk about anything innovative or new or diverse". Increasingly, it also means, "don't talk about caring about others."

That's anathema to a hobby built on imagination and community.

Hey, this is John. I don't do Facebook myself, but I know we're getting some of the usual "keep politics out of your games!" scolding and worse in comments and DMs, so I thought I'd come here to take some of the heat myself instead of leaving it all to our patient Customer Service staffer. If it really upsets you that we as a corporate entity object to the violence currently being perpetrated against our fellow Minnesotans under color of law -- things like a Hmong-American grandpa (US citizen!) being abducted from his homes wearing only a bathrobe, in sub-zero windchills, to say nothing of Renee Good being murdered with impunity (and the federal government announcing it will not investigate her shooter, but instead is investigating her widow, our governor, and the mayor of Minneapolis) -- there is something wrong with you. If you think it is unacceptable for a family-owned business, its owners, and its employees to express solidarity with their neighbors in these circumstances, there is something wrong with you. Maybe you think this is all a made-up thing. Seek professional help or religious counseling, and God help you when it is on your own doorstep. In the meantime, if you feel you need to block us or burn our games or remove them from your store shelves or whatever, as some way to protect your self-image as a True American Defender of Liberty, be my guest. Just for the record, and it’s insane that the mad king made me look this up, there is documentation of the US giving up all claim to Greenland to Denmark when we bought the Virgin Islands from them in 1916.

I've harped on congressional war powers for a long time and we do need to fix all that, but threatening to invade Greenland while ranting at Norway about the Nobel Peace Prize and imposing trade sanctions on NATO is more the kind of thing you can only fix by not having a literally insane president.

I’m not sure people outside the Twin Cites realize the prevalence and the fear ICE is causing in Twin Cities. They are dining undercover pretending to be couples at restaurants, they are going to businesses and checking the license plates of cars to find employees. Every public place is compromised.

Mario's La Fiesta in Berkeley, Ca. I went there every year for lunch by myself for my birthday. Got a grilled ground beef burrito and a chicken flauta. Later in life, Maro's nephew would become a customer of mine and we started holding store events there. Mario retired then passed away years ago.
